If you hang out in any FB Etsy group or Reddit, you will see tons of daily posts from (mostly) new Etsy sellers asking
"is this message from Etsy a scam?"
Its the usual scam messages asking the sellers to confirm their email to allow a sale to go through or re-activate their shops.
I noticed that most of the screenshots from these sellers were from their cell phones. Which made me realize most new sellers (younger generations) only use their phones to run their Etsy shops so they are not seeing the new "From Etsy' tab in the messages.
The only way to see the From Etsy tab is to use desktop OR go to the Etsy web site on the mobile browser.
So my question is, why doesn't Etsy make the Inbox tabs viewable on the Etsy Seller app??
Hello @CowboyPosterCo,
Messages from Etsy Admin will appear in your "From Etsy" inbox on a browser, where you will see the Etsy orange flag and a “From Etsy” badge. Should someone contact you claiming to be an Etsy Admin and the Message is not in this inbox, we encourage you to use the “Mark as Spam” option.
If you receive a message from Etsy, whether via email or Etsy Messages, we’ll always tell you why we’re asking for this information, and when you need to take action by. Scammers often use a sense of urgency or alarming language to get you to share your information quickly. Etsy will never ask you to respond directly with personal or account information via Etsy Messages, email, or social media. If we need to inform you of missing or required information, we’ll always provide an Etsy.com link or instructions on how to complete the requirements on our site, so that you don’t have to share any information as a direct response.
If you're ever unsure, you can always reach out directly to customer support through our Help Center: https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. Depending on your issue, this may include 24/7 live chat, requesting a secure phone callback, or email to an agent. Be sure to use official and updated Etsy apps, or Etsy.com on the web, when managing your Etsy account.
Thank you very much!
Why? The only answer I have is because etsy just does some asinine stuff sometimes.
They also omitted the 'mark as spam' button on the new blue sellers app for some stupid reason. The 'mark as spam' button is still on the orange icon shopping app so theres that I guess. We really shouldn't have to use two different apps to deal with spam messages especially with the crazy spammer scammer issues going on for the past 6 or so months.
@CowboyPosterCo - From all the threads I've seen it does appear the Seller's App is lacking. Think there may be issues with the app not showing messages have been replied to? And no ability to mark a message as Spam in the app?
I'm not an app user, but it is puzzling that despite the growth in the numbers of people using them, that Etsy didn't create an app that would do the basics plus maybe even a lot more.
I only use my desktop for my Etsy shops and I can't imagine running them from just my phone, but I can't figire out why Etsy hasn't made the Etsy Seller app just the same as the desktop version.
Someone mentioned to me they think it is because an Etsy shop wasn't meant to be run from an app and that's why there is a lot of things you can't do on the app.
So as I put on my tin-foil hat, I'll say that possibly the only reason Etsy has it, and pushes it to shop owners, is the amazing amount of data they collect? Even generic data has value.
i bring this up often about the app.
and the mods come into the forum and say not to respond to the scammers.
but you also cannot spam the messages on the app.
you can only mark them as unread or delete them.
so if you care about the star seller badge.
you have to respond to the scammers.
which is the opposite of what etsy tells you to do.
@nineteen27: "you have to respond to the scammers." Good points, except of course if Etsy has already has already shut down the scammer's account. Just reinforces the "need" for shop owners to use a browser (even a mobile browser) instead of the app to manage their business.
The app is useless.
I understand that many only have access to etsy on a mobile device and not a computer. You can still mark as spam if you use the mobile web browser (Chrome or safari or whatever one chooses to use) to access the etsy website.
I also read here in the forums that the orange buying app has the "mark as spam" function but I forgot to check it out for myself.
If it is useless and doesn’t do things you want it to do then why do so many sellers use it? When it first came out I tried it and the only useful thing for me was hearing the cha-ching when you got a sale, and even that got old after a month or so. It was cool to be in a store and hear a cha-ching and see 5 or more women dig in their purses for their phones.
I no longer sell so I haven’t seen the new app but I don’t think I have heard anything good about it.
Just to add I only use my iPad and iPhone, I don’t have a laptop or computer.
etsy pushed the app for so long on our dashboards.
i think it wore sellers down so they finally downloaded it.
i think some sellers were hopeful that maybe etsy fixed a few things with the old app.
not knowing the new app was so much worse.
or new sellers who use their phones for everything! want to run their shops from the app.
ps.
i never get tired of the cha-ching.
but it is a jump-scare for my cats.
so they hate it.
@CowboyPosterCo Only recently have I seen posts which say the new Blue App doesn't have the "From Etsy" Folder. Thank You for the reminder, I didn't know. It doesn't make sense, what with the swarm of scammers here. Etsy certainly knows Sellers are getting scammed continuously (and many times, from the App). We tell them to look for the "From Etsy" Folder (they don't know what we're talking about; it's not there on the App). The scamming has been escalating (at least from what I've seen (and that's only from reports on the Forum). Ridiculous.
You can mark messages as spam in the Orange Buyer app.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not just younger gen. Im 49, run a brick n mortar and have a regular shift work job along with a small farm. Everything I do is via my phone as it's in my pocket wherever I am. Maybe I'm naive to think that the whole idea of mobile phones as mini computers is a handy thing when it seems mobile apps are missing extremely important features. One wonders why an app sans key features is even available.
Ive not encountered scammers on ebay or my wife's square space site or my suppliers or banks or any other of the mobile apps. But after 5 days on etsy, all I've had is scammers with etsy logos.
When juggling the myriad of terms, conditions and jargon in all the apps and services I use for business, these scams blend in well untill one becomes accustomed with each new app or service or Web site etc. Etsy does the poorest job from my experience so far.
Customer support gave no insight or help when I'd sent a question complete with screen shots from what I worked out to be scammers. The support bot basically told me to follow the instructions carefully. If it "looked" at the screenshots I attached it would have identified that they weren't from etsy official.
