Etsy's email after sale seems to report wrong coupon code used. (Could explain a lot.)

Lately, I've seen a number of mentions on the forums of thank-you coupons being used by people who were not actually repeat buyers in the shop where they were used. There were theories from past buyers sharing coupon codes with their friends to coupon-scraping sites to Etsy technical glitches. Based on my experience today, I can add another theory. I don't know if it would apply to all the events reported, but surely to some of them besides just my own:

A few days ago, my stats showed one abandoned cart coupon sent out. Early this morning, someone bought something from my shop. The email from Etsy letting me know of the sale showed that the person got a discount, and the coupon code it showed used was the one for my thank-you coupon. But the amount was the one for my abandoned cart coupon. In the "sales and discounts" stats under "marketing," it does not show any recent uses of my thank-you coupon and does show a use of the abandoned cart coupon. Moreover, under Completed Orders, the receipt shows the abandoned cart coupon used. The customer was not in fact marked with the "returning customer" star, nor did the Orders screen show any previous orders from them.

It seems obvious that in this case, at least, the coupon code used was the one for abandoned cart, which was entirely appropriate, not the one for returning customer, which would not have been appropriate. It was just the email from Etsy Transactions that got it wrong.

I wonder how many of these automatically generated emails are getting it wrong? Is that the reason people are getting the understandable impression that their thank-you code is being used inappropriately, and are understandably frustrated?

That seems to make good sense why this is happening.

I haven't noticed this problem but since I usually don't get emails from Etsy and don't read the few I do get that is certainly a possibility.

It's happened to me 4 times in 10 days! This makes sense though. Thanks Trish

I never signed up for any coupons and my last two sales got clean the cart discounts. Too much going on where I live to even address that. Thank you for always being some I can trust with the information you share. I always read your answer when you post.

@TheVelvetPrincess

You've never set up coupons for your shop, but buyers are using (non-Etsy-covered) coupon codes anyway? That would be a huge issue.

Thank-you for your kind words. I hope I've been of some help at times, but I'm sorry I can't be of more help with what you are experiencing with coupons.

Re: Etsy's email after sale seems to report wrong coupon code used. (Could explain a lot.)

I just made a purchase from an Etsy shop I had never been in before....  added items to my cart, browsed a little comparing prices on external websites, etc. but when I went to my Etsy cart to check out, there had been a discount applied automatically.  I did not add this; I think it came from Capital One or Edge.  It was 15%, and on my receipt, it shows "Shop Discount".

Adding that I looked on the other side of the receipt and it shows "YOURFAV: 15% off" so I must have Favorited something in that shop to get the discount.

Re: Etsy's email after sale seems to report wrong coupon code used. (Could explain a lot.)

An update:

One other place where Etsy is showing the wrong coupon code as having been used is on the dashboard under "Recent activity." It shows my thank-you code with the purchase.

Again, clearly it was NOT the thank-you coupon, but the abandoned cart coupon, and the amount discounted was correct for abandoned cart. It's a display issue on the dashboard and in the Etsy Transactions email, not an issue with the wrong coupon actually having been used or the customer being able to use a coupon not given to them.

Re: Etsy's email after sale seems to report wrong coupon code used. (Could explain a lot.)

Lately I've seen things pop up when I go to a shop I've bought from before, for discount codes to me, as a repeat buyer. But nearly every one I see shows an end date that is already past. I put one in my cart to see what would happen, and it was going to take it, altho I didn't buy anything or use it. So there are lots of weird things going on.

Re: Etsy's email after sale seems to report wrong coupon code used. (Could explain a lot.)

I believe that it's just informing us that a THANK YOU coupon code was sent to our buyers after they made a purchase and not that the buyer used the thank you code for that purchase. My thank you coupon offer is the only one I have set up in my shop and all of my purchases have shown that Promo Code and they have received NO discounts with a code because they are not return buyers. I think your buyer just happened to have an abandoned cart coupon and used that for their purchase, where it looked like the codes were switched. They should have sent us a message explaining this new layout in our dashboard as it is really confusing at first.
