Hi everyone,
I run a small Etsy shop in Canada, and I'm having an issue with how my Etsy payouts are being processed. I originally had an account with ATB Financial, but every time I received a payout from Etsy Ireland, it was treated as a wire transfer (TT wire) instead of a regular direct deposit. Strangely, most of the time, I receive less than the amount stated in the email notification (mostly around $10 less) .
Because of this, I was getting charged $14 per transaction.
I contacted ATB Financial, and they told me they couldn't do anything about it because the payment was coming from Ireland. They suggested that I contact Etsy instead.
So, I reached out to Etsy, and they told me that they do not send payouts as wire transfers. They suggested that I change my bank, assuming it was an issue with how my bank was processing the payment.
Following their advice, I switched to a different RBC-but to my frustration, the exact same thing is happening again. Now, l'm being charged $17 per transaction and receiving less money than the amount stated in Etsy e mail notification. my payouts are still being treated as wire transfers.
I put my shop on vacation mode because I don't want to keep losing money on fees. Any help would be appreciated
I have no idea but why not change your subject line to be about Canadian wire transfers? Then you will get Canadian sellers giving advice.
That makes sense, thank you very much for responding
I'm in Canada and have never had a wire transfer from etsy. It's a direct deposit. I'm sure that must be what you are getting too. I don't pay any fees to deposit. I know with some business accounts you are only allowed so many deposits a month and then they start charging you.
Thank you for responding. That might not be the case, as I am still new and have only made a few sales.
I saw your Reddit post about the same thing. Are you saying this has been happening to you for the past 8 months? WOW! Perhaps this article might be of interest to you! https://www.etsy.com/ie/legal/etsy-payments/
Thank you for responding! Yes, this issue has been ongoing for the past eight months. I’ve tried multiple solutions, including switching banks as Etsy support suggested, but the problem persists. I appreciate the link—I’ll take a look and see if there’s anything useful there.
Etsy's first line of defense is it's always your fault and experience has taught me it's actually ALWAYS Etsy's fault. Seriously, good luck unwinding this.
Thank you very much.
I’m in Canada and I never had this problem, all my deposit are direct deposit, no fees
That’s good to hear! I’m not sure why I’m facing this issue, but hopefully, it gets fixed soon.
@HighStrideWears / @HighStrideDenim --
I wonder if your payment deposit issues are related to your multiple Etsy shop locations (UK & Canada) and/or your production partner location (Nepal)?
Are you having the same payment deposit issues in your other Etsy shop? ... https://www.etsy.com/shop/HighStrideDenim#about
If you are not aware of Etsy multiple shops policy ...
If you choose to run multiple shops on Etsy, you must list all the shops you run in the Public Profile section of each account. Each account must also comply with Etsy’s Seller Policy.
Thank you for your insight! Both stores are completely separate and managed by different individuals. My UK colleague runs the High Stride Denim shop, and after checking with them, they confirmed that they haven’t encountered any payout issues. My store is based in Canada and priced in Canadian dollars. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved soon.
A couple of things
Some banks charge fees for overseas transfers - they treat them differently to local transfers
did you originally set up as a USA shop in the background? some canadian shops have done this is the past
Hi, I understand that, but I am being charged $10 in Ireland to send money and $17 in Canada to receive it. I have tried contacting support multiple times, but all I get are automated emails with messages that are not related to the subject at all.
Find @cindylouwho2 ... a Canadian seller who often shares her expertise.
@GlassyFields Thanks, but I am stumped!
Wow - what a mystery if it stumps @cindylouwho2 (I don't recall ever seeing that happen before).
I would try to get Etsy to check all the set-up settings to see if there is something that makes your shop get payments differently from other Canadian shops. I'd document as much as I could as clearly and succinctly as I could and put it in a help request and keep responding with I still need help until you get someone to take a close look at this.
Or maybe it could be the way the bank account is set up. Moving to a different account should have fixed that ... unless the 2nd bank simply imitated what the first bank was doing. I might try a new bank account w/o referring to any previous accounts.
Has it always been this way or did something change 8 months ago?
I hope you're able to get this resolved.
@GlassyFields hahaha - it does happen!
Thanks for your suggestion. Since I am being charged $10 in Ireland to send money and $17 in Canada to receive it, I was told by the bank that it is a wire transfer and that they can’t do anything about it.
Hello fellow Calgarian! I have never heard of this issue with a shop in Canada. I receive my Etsy deposits into my Tangerine bank account, and before that into a CIBC account. My recent payments have all come from Etsy Ireland. I know people who get paid into RBC accounts with no issue
I am a little confused about the 2 shops with similar names selling similar items made by the same production partner, but in different countries, as that is not allowed. I do suspect that the issue might have arisen there, or with something else to do with ID and shop setup issues.
Check with the U of C legal clinic to see if they will do anything related to ecommerce payment issues: https://www.businessventureclinic.ca/
Also, have you filed a dispute with Etsy under 11.C yet? https://www.etsy.com/legal/terms-of-use#arbitrationagreement because it really sounds like you need to do something that will escalate this above 1st level Support (who generally can't help at all with this sort of issue)
Good luck!
Thank you for your response. It is very helpful, and I’m going to look into the resources you mentioned.
I guess I always thought North America got their $ from New York Etsy, and Europe got their's from Ireland.
Have you asked Etsy to contact you directly by phone to discuss this? Someone higher up such as a supervisor? I would push for a higher level to work with you on this. I have a feeling the lower levels don't know how to handle your situation.
Thank you for your suggestion. I’ve requested that a higher-level representative or supervisor to address this issue.
