Listings are being incorrectly translated leading to customers receiving products that do not match the listing description.
Example: I sell a watercolor donkey print. The listing title says it is "Unframed". The translation into Netherlands is "Ingelijste" which means "Framed". It should say "niet ingelijst". Etsy is now falsely advertising products in other countries and customers are disappointed when they receive something that does not match their expectations.
Etsy uses Microsoft translator. Sellers have the option of doing their own translating. How to Translate Your Shop and Listings – Etsy Help
If Microsoft is not translating correctly, you will need to inform Etsy.
This is kind of a hopeless situation for all sellers, because there's no way every seller can translate their listings to every language in countries where their goods are sold -- well, those of us who do sell internationally, anyway. (Fun fact: ALL digital download products are sold internationally because Etsy offers no way to restrict those by country).
There was a seller who posted recently where she had included "ENG" in her title to indicate that her product (a pattern) was written in English, but a Spanish buyer filed a complaint and demanded a refund because Etsy translated the title into Spanish showing "ENG" as "ESP" (Espanol). How can any seller protect themselves against this sort of thing for all languages? C'est pas possible!
Perhaps the only thing we can do is to self-insure by including just a bit extra in our pricing to cover any possible mandated refunds due to this sort of situation, since they probably aren't all that common for any individual seller. I've been lucky so far with this, but could happen at any moment.
