Hey there (Seller from Romania, based in Romania). I'm having problems with two errors on my Etsy shop legal information. More specifically:
- Error 1: "Your taxpayer name, address, or ID doesn't match local tax authority records. Double check all your info and try again."
Completely unexplainable. The information is 100% correct since it's the legal information from my business documents. The company's name, the owner's name, the correct tax ID.
- Error 2: "Business verification document: action required"
Again, unexplainable. The document I uploaded is the official registration certificate of my company, issued by the Romanian government. It clearly shows the company's name and its legal ID (the two elements that are supposed to be visible on the document I upload).
- Issue 3: I cannot submit any changes to Etsy in the "Legal Shop Information" section as long as the "Incorporated Business" option is selected. That option is mandatory for me because I represent a business, a legal entity. Yet, no matter how many times I enter the company's legal name and its tax ID, the "Submit to Etsy" button remains greyed out.
I've emailed Etsy 5 times and the customer support is an exercise in superhuman patience, to put it nicely. One of their first emails said that the "Business verification document action required" error was caused by something on their part and that it should be solved. This was 10 days ago, or so.
As for the other error, only in their 5th reply did they say that "Maybe I should make sure that I've entered the correct information and try again" and then proceeded to tell me to contact the IRS. Yeah, thanks a lot. You're telling me, a Romanian seller, to contact the US IRS.
Does anyone have the slightest idea what I can do to solve these problems? I'm just wasting time at this point, not publishing any products because the errors I'm getting are essential to being paid legally on Etsy.

@TheThreePixels If Etsy has replied, take one email only. Don't open multiple. Reiterate your problem. There may be diacritcs or something else the computer system cannot recognize. Tell them you are in Romania and not the US. You have to explain simply in direct terms. It's a pain but do it simply with direct facts in information.
Use that one email over and over until it is resolved. Opening more than one gets everyone confused.
Have a read here to see if it can help. There is a separate section for Romania when you click on the down arrow for Information by Country.
As mentioned above, just keep replying to one email. If you don't Etsy will close the matter and you will need to start again.
I received 2 more emails (on the same thread) and I'm 90% sure that they don't actually read the emails in their entirety. They just read the title, the first paragraph, and then hurry to send a generic reply that doesn't take into account ANY of the things you mentioned in the email. The last email from them referred ONLY to contacting the IRS and asking them for information and whether I had applied for an EIN recently. To be noted - I couldn't possibly apply for an EIN because I'm not from the US. Which I mentioned 2-3 times in my last emails to them.
At this point, I'm 90% determined to give up because Etsy customer support is the absolute worst form of human interaction I've ever witnessed. It's like talking to a bunch of retarded morons with reading comprehension issues who couldn't care less about your complaints and issues.
In my last email to them, I've been extremely thorough and comprehensive with:
- What errors I'm getting
- What I can and can't do
- What data I entered
- That my business is registered in Romania
- That I can't contact the IRS because I have no connection to the IRS
- That the data I entered is 100% my business's official data
- That I can't change ANYTHING on the financial page because the "Submit to Etsy" button remains greyed out no matter what I do
- That there are ZERO instructions about what's wrong with the business documents I uploaded. And by "zero" I absolutely 100% mean zero instructions as to what's wrong. It just says "action required". Nothing else.
- That I want a point-by-point explanation of why those errors appear, what I can do about it, why I can't submit any changes on the financial page, and why they're flagging my data as mismatched when it is LITERALLY the same data as in the business document I uploaded.
Their subsequent email only entailed me contacting the US IRS and waiting for 1-2 weeks if I've recently applied for an EIN. In other words, a totally irrelevant email. It touches upon NONE of my issues. No explanations of anything. Oh, and it was badly written in English.
At this point, I have zero expectations anymore. Frankly, this level of customer support is mind-blowing to me. They're failing at the most basic levels of reading comprehension and addressing the actual issues you're bringing up. Instead, it's like talking to robots. Semi-illiterate robots, that is.
Got any luck with them ? I am in the same situation and i am from Romania also...
@TheThreePixels Don't write long emails, keep it short and to the point. A couple sentences. Not in long paragraphs > Bank and tax info have to match exactly, i.e. exact name, address, etc. Also you need to add your country under your shop name > Go to your profile >Account Settings>Public Profile. Review the other tabs for accuracy too. Sometimes, if your shop is not set up correctly, this will cause the system to shut you down. By the way what are you selling?? Also you may want to read the Sellers Handbook while you're waiting to re-open. It will give you valuable information on how to open and run your shop.
Did you got resolution on this? I am having similar issue at the moment
Yeah, I did. I eventually started insulting them, calling them absolute idiots, and they fixed my problem. Long story short, basically.
Problem solved. I ended up straight-up insulting them and calling their customer service absolutely abominable, and they eventually ended up solving my issue after some instructions on their party and some rectifications on my part.
How long did it took you for all this?
I am facing the same issue. I am trying to change the Legal and tax details to Corporation from Individual in order to match the bank account. After filling out of the details, the "Submit to ETSY" button is greyed out. I am unsure why that is.
- My bank account is under the corporation name.
- I am 100% owner of my company.
- Shop legal info was set up under Individual (my name).
Any help/info would be very helpful!
Etsy's verification process is terrible and they do not provide any help. They keep repeating the same thing. When i told them the system was not allowing me to submit any changes due to an error (lots of screenshots provided) they asked me to "Review the info and submit again" over and over and over again for months (Not exaggerating) which is exactly what the system was not allowing me to do.
Same message from them no matter how much tried to explain it. They are useless.
ETSY SUPPORT IS THE WORST and the process is very FRUSTRATING.
I found the solution. Upload your ID only in 1 file not more. When I scanned my ID and I turn it into a pdf and I upload it as 1 document, I was able to click the "submit" button. It accepts only 1 file to upload not 2,3 or 4.
Yup This did it! After trying for over a week this finally worked, Thank you for the help.
Only thing is I clearly have a separate business address from my home address and Etsy is confusing the two so I hope they just approve it.
They want my personal ID to confirm my business address.
Whats funny is in my account my information is all showing verified yet I got this message on my Etsy shop dashboard to confirm my info.
Hi. I'm also from Romania and I'm facing the same issue. How exactly did you resolve this issue? And do you have a PFA or a SRL? I have a PFA and this might me the issue..?
