Hello,
I have a problem regarding prices displayed for my products, which I have found out that many others have experienced. I have been researching this for 2 hours now, found a lot of information, but no solution. So here is what the issue actually is:
I set a price for my listing in shop manager. When I click "View on Etsy", the price is higher (with more than 1 USD). When I go a search for the item, the correct price is displayed in the search results, but when I click on the listing it is again at a higher price. No sales or discounts added. I read that it has something to do with VAT being added (I live in the EU).
So here's what's really problematic:
- I have been trying to open my shop for 2 weeks now, experiencing different tech issues/bugs
- If VAT is being automatically added to your price, Etsy should clarify how that works in details - I have not been able to find such info, maybe I am just not researching the whole thing properly?
- If VAT is to be automatically added to the price, that's ok - but then why show 2 different prices to the customer? It's kinda ok that I see different prices in my shop manager than shown to the customers, but it is NOT ok that the customers see one price and than a higher price once they click on the listing. And at the end, which is the price that a buyer will actually pay?
- I have noticed with other shops that have the same (different price in search result than when listing is opened), and my impression is that it is mostly with digital products - has anyone else noticed the same?
- and finally, from what I've read this is an issue that has been going on for years and there's no indication that Etsy is doing anything to fix it - is that true? I have ready several discussions about that here on Etsy, and found no response from them.
If that is the case, could someone who has had the same issue give me some tips/workarounds as to how do I fix that? Or if this is just how it works, how do I set my prices properly? I will be super grateful, as I am completely stuck at this point.
Fot physical items, etsy has to add import VAT on items that are shipped from outside the EU to inside the EU, at the countries rate, foer all itms under 150 euros, There are similar laws for UK, Australia and new zealand,
for places like USA, they have a state sales tax, which is added at checkout, not shown in the listing price
So it will all depend on where the buyer and seller is.
and how you have your country set on your device or etsy, and your ship to country set.
If you have been changing your ship to, or etsy country on the bottom, then sometimes you have to go all the way to checkout, and put in a ship-to address, before etsy re-calculates for the correct country
........
For digital downloads, etsy also has to add VAT for all countries where VAT applies.
all above are a destination tax
.... none of this is specific to etsy, it's worldwide platform selling law.

.....
Etsy ha a bug on digital listings, where, if you star any to appear in the top 4 of your shop page, they show the non-included price until you click through
Thank you so much for your response and for the links! I really tried to find any information, Idk how come I couldn't, maybe just frustration. So from what I am getting, it is just the way it is. However, I still don't get why they don't just show the price incl. VAT also in the search results, so potential buyers would only see one price - like is that a bug or is it just how it's done/should be?
Well, I guess Etsy users are familiar with that, so I hope it is not something that affects potential sales too much.
the price is different, depending on where the person is viewing from
it's their countries rate, not your rate
Very frustrating, my pricing on my laptop shows a more expensive price than when I purchase items from my phone. It does not adjust when you get to check out. I paid more for an item on Etsy just because I used my laptop instead of my phone.
