Cannot update Taxpayer ID from Individual to Business

I am trying to update my Legal shop information on the Taxpayer ID page. I was previously an individual, but recently setup a business and got my EIN from the IRS and my Business Registration Number from Oregon.

On the page, I click edit, and choose Business, then enter the Name of legal entity and Employer Identification Number (EIN). I then fill out the rest of the form with my business address, Business Registration Number, Jurisdiction and primary shop owner. I then submit to Etsy and I receive a red box error that says, "There was an error saving your taxpayer information. Please try again." Scrolling up, under EIN, I get the error "The name and Tax ID provided does not match the IRS records. Please ensure you enter the correct name associated with your Tax ID provided."

This failed until I was unable to submit requests for 24 hours.

I attempted again today to update my Business and EIN. This time, I left the Type of seller as individual, and updated my EIN with my Business name, and this did not work. Then, again, I left the Type of seller as individual, and updated my EIN with my name and this was able to be saved on Etsy. (Minor success!)

I then, changed the type of seller to business, and filled out the Name of legal entity and EIN. I then fill out the rest of the form with my business address, Business Registration Number, Jurisdiction and primary shop owner. When saving, I get the same error, "There was an error saving your taxpayer information. Please try again." Scrolling up, under EIN, I get the same error as before "The name and Tax ID provided does not match the IRS records. Please ensure you enter the correct name associated with your Tax ID provided."

How do I save my Tax Information as my business name with my business EIN?

@3dPrintTherapyShop: Based on other posts about this, there are two possible issues : the external IRS database that Etsy uses to verify name and tax id has not yet been updated, or secondly the business as entered does not match EXACTLY what is in the database (on your paperwork).

I'm having the same issues and Etsy admin cannot figure it out either. Have you managed to fix the issue?

The answer from Etsy was  (but that did not help either)

Same problem here. Cant add/change details and Etsy support only replies with generic answers.

@l0rqvotk: Often the first response you get from customer support is an automated reply meant to weed out the people who contact support over common issues that can be easily solved.

Every eMail from Etsy support should have a link something like "I Still Need Help". Click on that link in each reply from Etsy (or actually reply stating that you still need help) to keep the report alive otherwise Etsy will assume that it is resolved. You may have to do this innumerable times, before anything is done but do not give up. DO NOT open a new issue or contact Etsy multiple times about the same issue (doing so closes the one you already opened and puts the new one on the bottom of the pile).

@BagmakerSupply  thanks for clearing that up. We still didn't gave up, but in the meanwhile we are setting up a shop on another eccomerce platform.

If there was another way to contact Etsy support, things would go a lot faster/smoother. Like chat or phone.

@PersonalizedTreazureits really strange that a platform like Etsy does not have a decent support team. For over a week we are trying to explain our problem to support but it seems Etsy doesnt really care about their customers. Because of this, we are building a Shopify store right now. The setup and verification in Shopify was a matter of minutes with the exact same data we used in Etsy.

You can try this...I hope it works

Make sure you have not only your business name but any LLC or INC it might end with, no punctuation and only 1 space between words. Like:

Into The Woods Soaps LLC - and not just - Into The Woods Soaps (as an example)

@2StrawberryCats  thank you. We tried everything, read every topic etc.

We are not getting any help from support and keep getting the same answers. So we put our shop on holiday mode and are now transfering our traffic to our Shopify store.

We had a question for Shopify support and we had an answer in minutes via chat.

It's a shame Etsy support is so bad. We probably would have stayed here for a long time if that wasn't the case.

Usually the error is the form on all the paperwork.  It has to match across the board.  The state information has to match the IRS database. IF the IRS database has something else or includes information beyond the name leave it off.    

Or are you considered a disregarded entity if you file as an individual for taxes but have a business name. For this you will need clarification from a tax consultant.  Single Member Limited Liability Companies | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)

i should not be associated with the irs I am Bulgarian company, and it the info is checked and shown in the Europeans commission website , i've uploaded  even screenshots pdf , to show that my info is correct. I am having a similar issue with this topic - I am trying to move from Individual to Business (just formed an LLC in the US) and I get the same response:  "There was an error saving your taxpayer information".

When I go further and inspect the page, I see on the network side that the response that appears before even processing the EIN/Filing number or anything else is that there "Is an invalid value (null) for boolean". Meaning that there is a piece of information that Etsy needs in order to process the transfer of business, but there is one field that is not filled.

But I have completed every single one and tried on several browsers, cleared the cache, and tried with different names (like Business Name + First Name + Last name / Business name LLC / Business Name LLC + First Name + Last Name).

Please provide a resolution for this.

I have also tried everything, nothing works.

I believe it is a technical issue that only Etsy can solve. 

(They told me to check with my accountant if all my info is correct, which definitely is).

The only thing we can all do is to keep messaging Etsy about the issue.

It's a relief to see so many others have the exact same issue I have been fighting these last 5 weeks. The generic answers from support is tiresome, Check your tax numbers, visit the tax office/accountant, clear cache/cookies, update browser etc. I even provided stamped proof my tax number is correct. Now I'm supposed to be waiting for the technical team to look into it. I'm still waiting and making the odd note beneath the ticket request to keep it open and up to date. 

When will Etsy accept this is a serious issue affecting all of us? How much longer do we have to wait? I too have transferred all my listing to shopify but I have a good steady customer base here. I don't want to loose them.

The ETSY support team sucks more than this problem. I have been trying to solve this problem for three weeks. But the real problem is Etsy support team is doing nothing about it. I really recognized it when I read the comments.

I'm having the same issue trying to change tax info from personal to business and keep getting, "There was an error saving your taxpayer information. Please try again." "The name and Tax ID provided do not match the IRS records." Please ensure you enter the correct name associated with your Tax ID provided." Everything is 100% entered correctly and Etsy support has been no help. I've done everything they suggested, entered the name every single way suggested, and checked my documents 500 times to make sure I'm correct. Still nothing. It's refreshing to see that I'm not alone. However, we'll all have another issue beyond Etsy... an IRS issue... should the problem persist. Very frustrating.

Same problem here, This year I got register as Business to my local authorities. While all other platforms that I use they accept the change, On Etsy I keep getting "There was an error saving your taxpayer information. Please try again." I contacted more than 3 times to Etsy and went through the usual answers that is technical problem, clear cashe on my browser etc etc.... This issue has nothing to do with what browser you use. It is a problem with the IRS that Etsy use and verifies the data. A solution has to be found as at the end of the month we have to issue invoices to Etsy and declare income to the local authorities. Very frustrating,
