Buyers unable to open files sent through messages

This has been an ongoing issue for a lot if my customers over the past six months.  Through the new etsy seller app and the standard buy from etsy app, several buyers have reported that when I sent pdf files through messenger (many do not have access to a computer to download digital files) they are unable to click to open them. They click the preview and it just opens a the image as a preview--not the whole pdf file (so a cut off preview image of file).

I tested myself through my apps, and while I can click and view files from the etsy app my end, I can't via the new sell on etsy app. I also can not open files through messages on my Samsung devices.

Buyers are having to try and access etsy via their mobile browsers, though am also emailing files to buyers as well.

Is this going to be fixed or even addressed?

Re: Buyers unable to open files sent through messages

None of the Etsy apps offer file download capability (nor upload, except for listing photos within the seller app).  This includes the in-app messaging function.  Lots of us digital sellers have provided Etsy with plenty of feedback on this point, so far to deaf ears.   It would help enormously if they at least put a message to buyers within the app itself that downloads must be made from a web browser, but apparently this is too much to ask.  Not even their much-hyped, brand-new seller app has been given this functionality.

Everywhere possible, I advise customers they must download using a web-browser, and NOT the Etsy app.  (You might want to look at one of my listings to see how I use the personalization feature to alert buyers, and I also have this info in my message to buyers.).  This has helped a LOT with this problem within my shop, but I worry about how many buyers get confused (because they don't read) why "personalization" applies to a quilt pattern and then don't complete their order.  A few folks do message me to ask, but I fear they may be a small percentage.

I've also noticed an uptick in recent weeks of buyers asking me to email the patterns to them.  Not sure if it indicates any particular change on Etsy's side with download functionality, or if it's within reasonable statistical variation over time.

So yes, they've taken something that should be straightforward, and turned it into a tangled mess for many buyers and sellers.

Re: Buyers unable to open files sent through messages

As far as I know digital files must be opened through a browser.  None of the Etsy apps allow files to be opened.   Whenever I send a duplicate copy of a file to a customer through the message system I always tell them they have to open the file using a browser.

I don't/won't  e-mail paid for Etsy digital orders but I do include the below message when completing the order.

Here's how to download your order.

I also wish this would be fixed. I send PDF proofs of customers design before we go to print. They use to be able to open the PDF through the app to view it but now, since one of the updates, it only shows them a super downgraded jpg preview with no ability to open the actual PDF. So many customers complain that the proof is blurry or pixelated because of this.
