Buyer sent email directly to me (in French). How did they find my email?
Was any hack/leak on Etsy recently?

Your email is sent on the order confirmation email a buyer receives.
just a mention are they saying theyare having trouble purchasing , or are showing you a fake order and asking for email info and bank or Etsy account info ?
If so this is a KNOWN scam to take your money.
If the order doesn't show on you sellers dash you dont have an order, you dont need to give Etsy any further info to process an order
@VINTAGEbytheMAGPIE no just asking more information about the product.
However I had a message on Etsy from someone asking me my email. He said he needed it in order to be able and purchase a (expensive) item from me... Hehe, of course I didn't even reply...
If it is someone who purchased from you previously, they receive your email, and you receive theirs.
I don't think Etsy should provide the seller's email to the customer - the deck is already totally stacked in favor of the customer and this is an unnecessary avenue of access as the buyer can contact us any time they want through the convo message system. Plus, there's a record right there for Etsy to review should anything become an issue. In the past, Etsy preferred that sellers not contact customers through our private emails and in fact recommended that we keep all conversations here on the Etsy platform.
Personally, I do not respond to email contact - I send them a response convo through Etsy. I know it doesn't change a thing, but it makes me feel better.
Guest buyers have no access to the etsy message system.
Their only choice is to email the sellers email as found on their order confirmation email.
Tow problems with that
Guest buyers for one
The other is a seller is having issues with their shop. With emails they have access to shipping the item. Without they may not.
Etsy still does recommend such and that is why sellers often send a message to the buyer recapping the email response so it is listed in the message system.
How is the deck stacked in favour of the buyer? Buyers are the ones handing over their money, and they have to trust that people selling on major e-commerce sites like Etsy are reputable. Once they exercise that trust and make a purchase, you have all their info, including their email, it is only fair they at least get your email, so that in the event of an issue they have a way to contact you if they are not getting answers on Etsy.
I want the buyer to have my email as with all the Etsy glitches and the fact that measurements are very important to my sales I want to be able to communicate if info is needed and Etsy is glitchy.
@CappuccinoLace That's not accurate. I recently had Guest Buyer that contacted me through Etsy convo with a question after purchase. Are you saying that was some sort of fluke or perhaps this aspect has changed and Etsy did not make a statement about that? Regardless, if you want your customers to contact via your private email - go for it. I don't.
Logout and try messaging a shop - it forces you to log in.
Either they set up an account after the fact, or the below.
"You'll receive an email receipt for each shop that you purchased from. If you have a question for a seller, you can contact them by replying to the email receipt." [I assume you then receive it as an etsy message. But how would a buyer know that replying to their email confirmation would send a message?]
"What’s the benefit of having an Etsy account?
@OldRaven I don't get that paranoid about emails. If it looks iffy, I hit the delete button. If it's from a buyer, I am happy to answer their questions about the item. Not everyone has access to etsy's message system. Guests are also allowed to ask questions regarding a purchase, and I am happy to answer them.

@JustMeToo "Paranoid" - not at all. Please reread what I said and perhaps you'll come away with a better understanding as to what I was trying to impart.
@OldRaven I read your post again. My response is the same. Guests have to be able to communicate with sellers.
Sometimes buyers use your email address as it is easier than logging in to Etsy to send a Convo.
WARNING: Etsy site publishes your phone, email and other information directly on google searches. Just found it, and worst, try to contact seller through etsy, and claims " failed"
it is a legal requirement from people selleing from/to the EU or UK that they publish their address and e-mail address, that anyone can see, before buying
no warning required, it is the law
the only warning required, is if you don't do it, then you are selling illegally, and against etsy's tous, which could get you in a whole heap of trouble
