Any reason why messages are sent to me 8 hours after they were sent?

A new customer contacted me last night (I thought) about doing a custom order for her, and I responded immediately.  She never got back to me, although that happens at times where they post a question and leave...not expecting an immediate reply.  So as I was re-checking the message, I noticed that the sender had sent it around noon - 8 hours before I got it!!!  Why???  Do you not realize if these aren't responded to immediately that the people move on to other sellers to get what they want?  Not to mention the irritation the buyer probably feels at being "ignored".   So thank you Etsy, because you probably lost me a custom order.  All I can do is reach out to her again...but if they are new to Etsy, they might not realize that they need to mark where it asks to receive messages back on Etsy as well as in their e-mails.
