All my shop items are digital original quilt patterns (not just revamped traditional patterns) that are completely designed and desktop-published by me. On all listings, I specify that I’m the maker, and that they are a “tool or supply for making things”. A handmade supply.
This morning, I looked at one of my listings and noticed Etsy now designates it as “handpicked”, a change from the “designed by” category assigned to all digital items with the recently introduced creativity standards. Handpicked — WHAT!? In checking other listings in my shop, they all show this same “handpicked” nonsense. I tried to update the listing to see if I could reset the designation somehow, but no.
I reported the issue through Etsy chat just now. The agent said he would forward it to the engineers to look at.
Other sellers may want to check the current designation of their own items.
editted to add that I also checked PDFs offered by other shops that I’d consider as handmade supplies, and they too show as handpicked.
Same. I also make handmade supplies. I started a thread about this yesterday:
I looked at three of your listings just now and they are all labeled as "Made by BlackSheepDyeWorks."
Ah, right, I saw that post yesterday by then kind of forgot about it because your products are physical so I didn’t even check my listings then. So maybe the issue is being a handmade supply rather than digital handmade? (Which was my 1st thought this morning before coffee).
And now I see this is just Etsy faffing around with one of their stupid tests; in another browser, my items still show designed by. *sigh*
I can't help, only sympathise.
But I did want to acknowledge your excellent use of "faffing" - I do love that word!
Yes, I see the Handpicked by on your listings.
I wonder would it change if you tried moving one of your listings from Craft Supplies & Tools into a different category?
Hopefully it is one of Etsy's typical Friday screwups and they will fix it come Monday.
I wish they would designate patterns as "Designed and Made By" as it doesn't seem right to be lumped in with Pod which is designed by, but made by a production partner. The creating of the digital or physical pattern can sometimes be almost as much work as the design.
I’ve found the same issue, along with completely random inconsistency!
Digital planner stickers showing as Designed by in Safari and Made by in Chrome, digital machine embroidery files (different shop) showing as Designed by in Safari and Handpicked by in Chrome, apart from the latest which doesn’t show anything in Chrome, but Designed by in Safari!
The embroidery files don’t have anything selected in the How is this digital content created? section of Core Details, but although I click on the created by me tab and then click Apply, it never sticks and that section is blank again if I go back into the listing.
It’s all getting a bit trying.
Hello @PieceByNumberQuilts2 ,
I just went to your Shop, and I see “Designed by” in all your items.
I use a computer and Microsoft Browser, but I also tried it with Google, and it was the same.
Your Shop I can see it the same as I always do. As I said, your items I see it with the “Designed by” as always.
It must be by buyer as well as browser, then. When I look at @PieceByNumberQuilts2’s listings I see Designed by on Safari but Handpicked by on Chrome.
I have one listing in the Craft Supplies & Tools category and it has been changed by Etsy to say "hand picked by". Some other listings of my finished pieces handmade by me aren't marked at all and some have the "made by". I didn't check all my listings, just a few.
Edited to say after checking a few more listings, it looks pretty random what they put. Some finished pieces say 'hand picked by" too.
Hopefully, Etsy isn't heavily utilizing this feature in its search algorithms at the moment, since it isn't working as it should. It has been a significant problem in the past. The concerns are that these items could be marked as not as described due to misrepresentation. And they might not have the ability to be matched correctly with a shopper.
* My original, handmade paintings on canvas are now showing as "Designed By"
* My paper prints, which are made from my paintings, are now showing as "Made By"
This is what I'm seeing and not what I entered them as.
@NancyQstudio Wow, so it's all really messed up with these designations! Original handprinted canvases are now "designed", depending on the browser. If this is a test, I have no idea what concept Etsy imagines they're testing.
And as you say, it could potentially lead to NAD claims, at least for things Etsy designates as "made by" which are not. Not saying your paper prints aren't "made by " you on your home printer, I don't know, but if they get this wrong for your items you can bet it's much more widespread.
@PieceByNumberQuilts2
I see "designed by" on your patterns.
Supplies for crafts.
@BlackSheepDyeworks
I see "made by" on your yarns.
Supplies for crafts.
@NancyQstudio
I see "made by" on the paintings, hand painted jars, tiles and the prints I looked at.
Using a desktop, W11, Edge.
@vintageNCtreasures Thank you for checking! I'm happy you can see my paintings and jars as handmade. That's different than what I am seeing. But, my prints and tiles should all be designed by. They are printed with my handmade artwork so I've assigned their core details as "Designed By". It seems that Etsy is either having a glitch or possibly testing reassigning this area via bot recognition (interpretation).
