Homemade toothpaste?

Hello all welcome to my first post!
I want to discuss homemade toothpastes and what everyone thinks about it.
I know that the ADA says fluoride is essential for protecting teeth and preventing tooth decay but it is a man made chemical and as far as that says I don't want to put it in my body. We get enough as it is with the fluoridization of our water and other things right? So I got to researching and found that the all natural sweetener Xylitol can be just as effective at preventing tooth decay with proper oral hygiene. In fact xylitol.com highly encourages adding xylitol to current oral hygiene routines to increase and improve effectiveness of the current routine. I have found multiple DIY toothpaste concoctions online and I have developed a toothpaste I believe will be highly effective in keeping my teeth clean and white, killing germs, protecting enamel, and stimulating my gums without fluoride. Im still finishing off my tube of "Tom's of Maine" toothpaste but I have my jar of homemade ready and waiting to be used. I am really excited to try this and I have hopes that my mouth will feel and look even better than before.
How do you feel about fluoride in your toothpaste and/or drinking water?
how do you feel about xylitol?,
I am aware xylitol can be harmful to dogs (no studies on cats) and I have seen those extreme people that are "anti-xylitol" anything because of their pets but come on get real people. Chocolate is bad for dogs we don't stop eating that on account of them. We keep it up, out of reach so our precious pets and babies and children don't get into such dangers and are safe from anything that could be deemed toxic or harmful to them. It's just common sense.
So cheers to my first post I hope you all have a lot to say! I love learning new things and hearing input and opinions about various topics so I will be sure to keep this up!
Good Day Everyone!

Re: Homemade toothpaste?

Hi! I’m not a big fan of commercial toothpaste! I’ve weaned the rest of the family to a natural brand, but they are a little more resistant to change. I avoid fluoride at all costs… I grew up in the hills drinking nothing but our spring water and eating real unprocessed food, and I never had a cavity until I was in my late 20s. This was only after I had lived in the “real world” and like a typical American for several years. Anyway, to each their own…. but I prefer eating, applying, and breathing as few chemicals as possible. Best of luck with your toothpaste!

Re: Homemade toothpaste?

Sorta feel the same way about toothpaste that I do about shampoo. Low-cost home techniques can work equally or more effectively and it's more about the scrubbing anyway. Baking soda/salt/mint oil toothpaste doesn't taste as sweet but it does get rid of my garlic breath much more quickly.

Re: Homemade toothpaste?

Fluoride is a toxic byproduct of Aluminum production. Like many other toxins, it found it's way to the population after wartime uses fell.

Fluoride has also been used as rat poison.

For my teeth, I use a water only brush, then a rinse with sea salt and hot water.

Most toothpastes are super abrasive, which is why I don't use baking soda for a toothpaste.

Re: Homemade toothpaste?

I'm currently working on trying a few homemade toothpaste options to get away from the commercial options, mostly because of the fluoride. The one we're currently testing out has a slightly strange taste to it, but we like how our teeth feel and it was super cheap to make, which is awesome!

We're trying more and more to go natural, and I really don't intend to change that! :)

Re: Homemade toothpaste?

I have 3 versions of toothpaste and I have been using the flouride free version for 18 months. I LOVE it. I will never use store bought again. Granted, it took a small window of adjustment to not have a candy flavor in my mouth, but my mouth never feels fresher longer than using my handmade version. My teeth are whiter and the hygenist commented on it, until I told her what I do. Then it was all, "well you really need flouride," blah blah blah. I told her I had xylitol in it that does the same thing without the bad side effects, and she poo pood it because it wasn't enough to do anything and "nothing remineralizes teeth." However, at the end of my kids appt, they were ready to push a remineralizing toothpaste at $18 bucks a tube on me that had what? Xylitol. Needless to say, I take everything this country's medical professionals say with a grain of salt and an eye on my wallet. Nothing homemade is good enough until it makes them money.
