Pricing for Sock Animals

Hi Everyone,
I am a senior marketing major at the university of Texas at Dallas and I am currently working on a branding project for my shop- clio164 for a class project.
One of my questions that I asked people was : How much do you think this item is worth?
Most of the people quoted a very low price- $10- 25 dollars for one of my larger sock animals. This troubles me because I spend a lot of time hand sewing the animals themselves. The griffin posted on my shop took several hours to make because i had to hand sew on strips of felt to make the feathers. My only real expenses for my items besides my time is the cost of stuffing and thread- I usually get my socks for free from people.

Ultimately, Should I lower my prices on my work? Or should I try to change my niche in the market place?

Anything imput I can get on this would be very helpful.
Thanks

Do you think I should lower my

Re: Pricing for Sock Animals

My opinion is, NO, you should not lower your prices.

I just had someone request a custom order and when I quoted him my price he said he would only purchase if I lowered my asking price by $20.

Here's what I wrote back to him:

Hi ---,

This is a custom order & takes too long to make for that to be worthwhile for me :(

I know that sock monkeys sell for much less in stores but handmade takes alot more time and effort and therefore has alot more personality than mass produced items.

I did find these Etsy listings from my sock monkey team members that are more in your price range, please check them out:

(Insert various etsy sock monkey listings)

Happy Shopping! :)

That's my opinion, hopefully some other sock monkey makers will comment...

Re: Pricing for Sock Animals

Hi .. I would say No also. When the shop first opened, I got several of that type of request. I found out that the person requesting them was a shop that was going to re-sell them.

Fabric has doubled and tripled so many of the styles I used to make from knit fabric had to be discontinued.

Most of mine are now made from socks. I would concentrate on making them unique and not worry about them being cheaper at the stores .. handmade is nicer.

I do offer "free" personalization on all of the full sized styles .. which does seem to be a feature that is much appreciated.

The one pictured in the shop avi with my grandson is listed at $36.00... and I have sold several.

Happy Sales to you!

Re: Pricing for Sock Animals

Absolutely no. What most people are basing their pricing opinion on is asking themselves what would Walmart sell this for or target?. Most people don't think about how each item a crafts person makes is made by one person not a factory. Most of us don't get bulk discounts on supplies, although we do have cheap labor....:) In making animals, I don't think most people will be able to charge for their labor. I am a fine artist and a sock monkey maker and it is much easier for me to sell a painting for over $100.00 which usually takes me much less time ,than one of my custom monkeys. I do believe you have to take into consideration what the market will pay, but I do that by looking at my fellow Etsy sellers pricing and other Internet searches. When I first opened my shop I was selling my custom monkeys in the $20.00 range, now they are $40.00 and up for custom, although I do sell premade monkeys and bunnies for around $25.00(these take much less time and are not customized or personalized). I have not had trouble selling my custom monkeys. I have 17 to do before Christmas...yikes. I have been open a year and it takes a little time to find your buyers, but you will and they will appreciate something handmade versus mass produced. Sometimes we just need to educate potential customers about the process, time involved, why what we make is special, unique, worth the money...etc. On a side note, I do a couple of good (juried) arts and crafts shows each year and sometimes it helps for people to see these items in person, plus it helps to see and hear what people think about your product. I sold most of my 20 monkeys I made for the show and got 3 custom orders all pre payed, and lots of potential customers. Sorry for the ramble, hope some of this helps. Good luck. One more thing my sister in law is also a fine artist who does a lot of free lance work, she said to me that she doesn't do anything unless she is getting $40.00 and hour, she told me this after I told her it took me 5 days to finish this cross stitched school logo patch on 28 ct (2800 cross stitches). Can you imagine what my monkeys would cost if I added even a dollar an hour labor let alone $40.00...lol I love what I do so I'm not complaining just still rambling. Good luck to you!

Re: Pricing for Sock Animals

Thanks to everyone for these posts. Especially our captain's note to the customer!

I come from a fine art background and my heart sinks every time I see a handmade plush toys priced for $20 and under. I know how long it takes to hand stitch toys, let alone the time it takes to design something new! While I am able to charge $25/hr for my glass ornaments, I find myself thinking, between $10-$15 for my plushies just so they will sell. Maybe I will teach classes so people realize how much time and work go into them and decide it's easier and less time for them to pay than to make it themselves. Plus, they will never be as unique as my creations :) Good luck to all!

Re: Pricing for Sock Animals

Cool link, thanks Jennifer!

Very cute plushies in your shop, very unique.

Unfortunately the economy is not the greatest but just hang in there!

Kelly and Aunty Ann make some very good points.

Resellers will try to "low ball" you so they can profit from your work.

I guess you just really have to balance what you know your work is worth with what the market will bear.

Look at similar items for price comparison.

Get some sales under your belt and build up your reputation with excellent customer feedback.

Beautiful packaging, thank you notes, and attention to detail result in a satisfied Etsy buyer.

OK, I feel like I'm gettin all preachy so 'nuff said for now...Good Luck ;)

Re: Pricing for Sock Animals

Thank you Ilia!

I try to figure out my wholesale price first for resellers and then double that and find a happy place between my wholesale and doubled price. Once something sells I get a much better idea and if a lot of them sell, I up the price.

And I agree about attention to details. Customers on Etsy are here because they want something special and unique. I found it makes a difference when I respond to convos right away. We give customer service straight from the creators which is a rare thing these days.

Happy March, happy sales!

- Jen
