Question about varnish etc

Hi everyone!
Lately I've been searching on the net for ways to seal the cuffs I make to be more durable.
I currently use classic spray varnish with satin finish and wax , it works nicely but I would like something more durable
I've read about polyurethane and varathane but I haven't found many informations
Has anyone use it on surfaces that change shape and are more flexible?
If yes, do you have any problems with crackles? etc?

Your help would be really appreciated :)
Thank you
Chris

Re: Question about varnish etc

I have used Varathane on my handpainted candle mats. I haven't had any complaints about any problems. My mats are flexible, but they are generally lying flat on a surface. I love the Varathane because it is water based. I had some spill on my sealed table where I work (which isn't a valuable table), and it leaked through a hole in the plastic tablecloth. It dried on, and there is now way I am getting it off without an electric sander. So, you can see that it is quite durable once it is dried on a surface. It is fairly expensive. I think it is just under $50 dollars a gallon, but I only use maybe two gallons a year. Cheryl

Re: Question about varnish etc

The only thing you have to watch out for regarding Verathane is that it is not as tough and hard as polyurethane. I had my floors refinished with verathane and after a year it started to wear off in places.

On the other hand, polyurethane is notorious for turning yellow after exposure to sunlight. Unless you don't mind an amber cast to your items....
