Duplicating Items

Hello,

Just curious about this point: I've heard many people say that if you import your etsy shop to supadupa, you need to change your titles and descriptions or google will leave you out of searches. Is this true and if so, why?

I might have 5 views ever that came from google to Etsy, but I need more than that for my supadupa shop, don't I?

I have NEVER showed up in google searches from etsy so I guess it doesn't matter for me. UGH.

Hey Sarah, you need to change about 30% of the listing descript at least. Not sure about tags and titles though.

It's because google picks up on listings that are the same and picks out all the ones that are copies so that it doesn't pick up any spammers who are just auto creating listings on various sites in vast numbers.

Now, does that just mean rearranging all the words? There are only so many ways to say "Small dog sweater."

"sweater for a petite dog" "petite dog sweater" "dog sweater under 7 pounds" "sweater, dog XXX breed"

Sarah- no, you can't just rearrange words. Think of synonyms. Look in an online thesaurus if you need to. I think titles may be ok if only the words are rearranged but I could be wrong. Listing descripts however need to have different wording.

Does this go for the Shop description too--like make it different?

We definitely do need to change at least 30% of our titles and descriptions in order not to be considered to have duplicate content. What I've never figured out is if google sees 2 things as duplicates whether they will penalize both items with bad placement or just one of them. If all other things are equal Etsy is always going to get better placement because they have a huge number of backlinks and very high google ratings.

Do the items still remain in your Etsy shop too? AND If you are selling OOAK items, you can't have same item listed in both shops, right??

Yes the items still remain in your Etsy shop. As for OOAK I guess it depends upon if you want to take the risk of double selling or not. I do it as my sales come in so slowly it would be highly unlikely that I would sell the same item twice in the few hours that I might not be online.

This is hard for me too. If 3 of the first 4 words of my titles aren't plus size sweater I'm not going to get found in the first few page of google. They're all plus size sweaters unless they're capes or shrugs. There aren't any synonyms for plus size that get used very often at all in searches. At the moment I'm inclined to give up great Etsy relevancy to make sure that my own shop titles are better than the Etsy ones but I'm going to have to do a lot of testing to figure out how not to compete with myself. There are so few ready to ship plus size sweaters on Etsy that I think that I can get found easily here anyway.
