How o start my pottery buisness.

Hey guys ive been wallowing about this in my head for weeks now. I have many things to start selling and I have done a couple shows. I have not put up any of my work on etsy just yet because I have not had the equipment to take photos . I just would like to know how to really get myself going. I am very comfortable selling my work, but I am just a little stuck to know where to start. So I figured I would ask all the wonderful potters on this team. :)

Thank you everyone!.

Jess.

Re: How o start my pottery buisness.

Its exciting and daunting getting started. The photos have to be good quality though...which can be hard with pottery if items are glossy and you're just starting out. I started with one full page of items, read up on titles and tagging, and just get started. Initially I didn't have any sales until I used Facebook and told all of my friends that I started a shop and was having a sale. Have a good story to tell - something about why you are making and selling pottery in the first place. Once you have the Etsy shop and page of items, then you start promoting using email, social media, blogs and Etsy forums. Before you post items I would check out other Etsy sellers who make work similar to yours for pricing ideas, and other comparisons. Unfortunately photography and promotion are almost half of the work so just making beautiful pottery isn't enough. Best of luck to you!

Sara's got it down especially about the photos. Your jewelry shop looks good.

I still struggle with my photos. Getting the lighting right can be a nightmare for shiny pots. I've used a gradient and plain white backgrounds with back drops I made from regular poster board. Indirect natural light is best and turn off the flash. You don't need fancy equipment to get decent results. Like anything, it's practice. We potters know all about that!

Then promote, promote promote! Best of luck to you!
