Re: Can You Mix Paint With Glaze?

You cannot mix paint with glaze. The components burn out in the kiln. You can use Mason Stains to add coloring. Check out some ceramic supply stores to find them.

Re: Can You Mix Paint With Glaze?

You are best off getting a good stable clear base and adding in small amounts of mason stains. How much depends as much on which cone you fire to as on the stain and the color you are trying to achieve. This does work better in lower temperatures and in oxidation than in reduction and higher temperature because some stains break down due to reduction or higher temperatures. Also it is best to pick accurate mason stains than to try to mix and match to achieve particular shade since the chemicals in the stains might react with each other.

When using the mason stains, get a clear base, like Sumio Clear, and then start with small percentages of Mason stains. I would start at a low percentage and go from there. A little stain goes a long way. Make small batches at first to determine what percentage you need for the results you desire. You can also buy clear base glazes.

Re: Can You Mix Paint With Glaze?

I was just wondering if I could mix underglaze colors with clear glaze. You fire both to the same cone so I don't see a problem mixing them. Just was wondering of anyone has done this?!?

Casi, it works better if you put on the underglazes first, let them dry, then put the clear gloss coat on top. Don't know why, but I've had the underglazes burn out more if I mixed them. Dungan used to have some glossy underglazes, I forgot the name now. Have fun!

Re: Can You Mix Paint With Glaze?

I tried looking for the duncan colored glazes and could only find red and blue when I went to the ceramic store in my city. I have a piece that I mixed some glaze and underglaze with and its currently in the kiln right now. Hopefully it turns out.

Re: Can You Mix Paint With Glaze?

I fire underglaze at a higher cone on greenware and then glaze. I have however cheated and used a sonestrike underglaze on a fired pot and the glazed over it and fired both at a cone 06.

Re: Can You Mix Paint With Glaze?

I dont like painting on greenware therefore I always paint on bisque...let it dry about and 30 mins, then glaze over it. Firing both to cone 06.

btw I successfully mixed underglaze with glaze and it looks so amazing. Really wish I could find the glaze shades, but until then this will work.
