Buying a Wheel - Any Recommendations ?

I'm going to buy a wheel for my home studio. But I'm feeling a little bewildered! I want an electric wheel that's going to last for a long time, and not require a ton of maintenance. Realistically, I don't think I'll ever center hundreds of pounds of clay, as I am not particularly large person. But I want something that's powerful enough that it won't slow down or stop if I push down hard on the wheel head.

I've asked a couple potters and one highly recommended Brent. Another said Brent is over priced and suggested Shimpo instead. What do you recommend? Do you have a wheel that you love? Which one is it?

Re: Buying a Wheel - Any Recommendations ?

Both Shimpo & Brent are good. I also like Pacifica. However if price is the issue I suggest Craigslist.org. I got my Brent CXC on Craiglist for $300. Took few month of looking and then i had to drive couple of hours each way but the wheel is still going strong 33 years after manufacture and at least 3 owners later. I have had it now for couple of years and no problems whatsoever. We have Brent & Pacifica at school and in two years only one wheel was briefly out of service. I think it was a Brent with some foot pedal issues. Was fixed by next class.

I have a Pacifica and love it! I think it's probably one of the more affordable brands without going the too-cheap route.

Similar to Antware's story, we got a couple of used Brents for $100 each through Craigslist! They both needed the motors fixed but even getting that done was much cheaper than buying new and they run perfectly now.
