How Much is My Time Worth?

I feel like after summing up how much all my materials cost, I get a bit lost when knowing how much to charge for the time and effort spent making the item.  I don't want to over or undervalue myself....I have a hard enough time charging for the things I make anyway and am always feeling guilty to sell for less.  So many people have told me to charge more but I struggle to evaluate when there are not set numbers to work with.

How do you all go about pricing time and effort?

I've struggled with pricing, too and it is a real balancing act.  Sometimes when the economy has been slow and sales reflected that, I would sell at cost.  Other times I've kept track of my time for each project and paid myself minimum wage.  I use rare and hard to find materials and my materials cost can be high so I may charge less for labor.  My prices are sometimes less and sometimes more than comparable products.  I have to put in the time to keep my finger on the pulse of the market and be keenly aware of supply and demand and take that into consideration when pricing.  The IRS defines a business from a hobby by the profit it produces so I sell fabric supplies to balance out any losses in other shop sales.

Pricing skill, craftsmanship, expertise and talent is very individual so I measure my compensation by other factors, as well.  Of great value to me is I love what I'm doing, I work at my own pace in my own studio and my custom work is sought by people who appreciate my skill and artistic ability.  That is enormously rewarding to me.  The bottom line for me is I am selling a form of artistic expression and the only one who can really put a value on that is the customer.

Re: How Much is My Time Worth?

Ive kind of figured I would go by what minimum wage is for time spent working on it....and I've tried to use the Etsy Excel template and that has helped some, however it's hard to account for price of material too sometimes. For example, one spool of thread could last me one big project or several small projects and there's no way to divide that up exactly...so I don't know what to put for cost of materials in my calculations.  Even then, I have this guilt trip everytime someone inquires at the price and I can't stop myself almost from giving a lower price than I think is reasonable. I'm such a bad salesman haha!

Thank you for your input AlorasAdorables! I love your shop, you have  lovely items!
