Show Insurance

My mother used to buy insurance for shows years ago until it got too expensive. The underwriters want to consider a potter a manufacture and add a big price tag for coverage. When she did shows it cost her $400 a year and when she stopped they wanted $3,000 a year because they called her a manufacturer and that comes with greater liability. So she stopped buying insurance and I have not looked into it myself for my pottery.
Now I was not going to bother with insurance this year but I have been seeing some discouraging developments out there. One the bombing in Boston and the flash mobs that are becoming a problem for Detroit. I have four big Detroit area shows and think maybe this year I should look for insurance.
My question is does anyone know of low cost show insurance?
Thanks in advance,
Virginia Rose

Re: Show Insurance

I have to get show insurance for a show in a few weeks and a friend of mine has suggested this company: http://www.rvnuccio.com/

I haven't called them yet, but it might be worth investigating.

Re: Show Insurance

I will check it out. I know some art groups used to offer it years ago. But I have lost track of who.

Re: Show Insurance

Checked it out. Seems to be just liability. Quoted $339 for 70 days of shows at 500,000. I will have to look into it more because I want to cover my tent and product. Looks like a place to get a one show liability product. That could be useful at times.

Re: Show Insurance

I looked into it this week. I called my agent and he told me about 700. Per year. But he told me about tulip insurance which you can purchase through the town having the show for about 75. One show only. I don't make much money so I will continue to search this topic.

Try rlicorp.com. They have general liability and product liability and cater to small businesses.

Re: Show Insurance

I would suspect that "acts of terrorism" are always excluded, but insurance could be a real benefit if your house got broken into or you had an accident on the way to/from a show and your inventory was damaged. It would be nice if we could get reasonable insurance coverage.

RLI Insurance isn't a member of the BBB, but they have an A+ rating from them. That's promising.

Re: Show Insurance

My insurance covers, my products, tools, table, tent, etc. Everything I bring to the show. I had it written that way. It even cover storm damage. I need to take a picture of the booth when it is set up at each event. I have my Ipad & square for credit cards, so that is easy. It is with a local independent insurance company.

Re: Show Insurance

I was very impressed with the RLI quote...and acts of terrorism ARE covered for a small fee. Surprising.

Re: Show Insurance

K&K offers single event insurance. I use them for my aerobics liability policy and have no complaints.

Re: Show Insurance

Read the policies and what they cover, most of those one time event things only cover liability.
I have a business policy with the same company as my home owners. That way if the place burns down, I won't have 2 insurance companies arguing over who covers what.
Insurance is for theft , fire, and liability on all of my stock. Plus it also covers me at shows for about $ 450 per year.
Some of my shows require me to put them on as an additional insured- I have to carry liability insurance for them at my booth space- which runs $10 a year extra.

If you contact a independent insurance agent and go with a smaller mutual insurance company the coverage is usually better and the rates lower that national name brand companies. Plus the claims are easier.
