New here- How to get started?

Hello all. I'm new to your wonderful group. I want to get started with craft shows, but don't know how.
I am in a big financial pinch right now. Most shows are either very far away ( I live in middle of nowhere Piqua Ohio) or very expensive. I need to find some small local inexpensive shows to get started, but can't find any. I know they exist! I've been finding websites for my town and surrounding towns that list local events, and senind them emails asking if they know of any events taht accept craft vendors. I have gotten two responses! One that told me about one show in October ( starting at $150.00 a booth), the other said "sorry our little local fair stopped having craft vendors a few years ago" The other organizations have not returned my emails. I have only found one local group for Dayton Ohio on Etsy ( that's the closest civilization) and it's only moderatly active. They told me I should come to the monthly team meet up, which is in the evenings when I work! I've tried to net work on Facebook with no useful results. ( I can't find anyone near by there either. The closest facebook craft group is for Cincinnati, which is pretty far away) I check the notice board at our local library. I can't find anything! I don't know anyone localy who does crafts to talk to! I went to one small holiday show at my husband's work place and met a nice lady who gave me her card. She said to conatct her and she would give me a list of local shows she attends. That was over three months ago. She never returned my email. I'm running out of ideas! I need to find shows that are under $50 in fees that are localish to get started. I know this is rare, but I know they exist. I did a couple craft shows many years ago when I was a teenager (selling hemp necklaces) and knew people in my town. Now I've moved away and just don't know how to get started!

Re: New here- How to get started?

You should check Craigslist. Under the Community/Art section. That is where I found a lot of shows at first. Of course, keep in mind that these shows are not going to be as well advertised, they will probably draw just the local crowd. So make sure you take into consider the location of the event. Who will be in the area that will see a sign on a building. Stick to downtown areas with high foot traffic. These smaller events you might do better. I made the mistake once of going to an event for a church, which ended up being on a side street. I had no sales...

Re: New here- How to get started?

Jennifer, Your work is very nice. I can not imagine that you would not be accepted in some of the medium to upper level shows. of course then the question is do you have enough stock to make it worthwhile to do an expensive show.

i understand a lot to consider. if you can travel the options greatly increase. I used to try to do shows within 3-500 miles each way max. its hard but you have more to select from.

local shows are great and easy to do, sometimes you get lucky with them.
good luck.

Try this website and see if they list anything local to you.

Also, check your local county fairgrounds and see if they have any craft shows.

Good luck!
