Discussion of SEO optimization

Howdy all, this group really has strong potential, it is important that we work together to maxime a community effect. I have a background in NGO consultation and web-content development, here are a few things that I've learned.

Seach engines, google especially, use an algorithm called 'PageRank' to determine how high on their results list your website might appear. While this algorith is, at this point in its evoltion, highly complex, the fundamentel way in which PageRank decides whether or not a given website is relevant is by measuring how many other websites have linked to it. Wikipedia is consistently a number 1 results because millions of other websites link to it. If you would like your etsy page or personal website to display towards to top of google's results, you have to get a link to your page onto as many other websites as possible. To start, we should make a thread for all of us to post our etsy pages and personal websites, and a seperate thread for any new contact we want to show off to the group.

Second, is the importance of curating the language of your personal page. While you want general common language that is likely to be searched, you often have to then compete with many other like-minded pages who have similar language and crowd you out. It is highly reccomended that you also describe yourself with unique and specific language. Though fewer people might google these specific words, those that do will be instantly drawn to your page. Typically, in addition to general descriptors, you want a set of 3-5 specialized words to describe yourself that capture a specific market. I used to work for a peacebuilding NGO. Our website described us in two ways, the first was general 'international peacebuilding', and the second was specialized 'international multi-track diplomacy clinic'. Take the time to curate your page's language to capture specific markets and you can escape the competition of other pages.

Lastly, while going through and favoriting every other team member's page, i found that not many of you have done the same. In order to maxime the impact of this team, it is crucial that we are an active community who support one another.

Kindly,
Monty LaSalle-Hill

AWESOME post Monty! Thank you! I started a thread about searching each other through google, which you can probably tell me is a good move or not.

How can we link to pages like wikipedia?

Re: Discussion of SEO optimization

to clarify, its not about linking to other pages, its about getting other pages to link to you.

To start, yes posting your link to as many teams and dedicated discussion threads as possible is a start. These etsy-based communities seem like a great way for us to get our links to as many pages as possible.

If you have any friends with blogs that are willing to promote your shops have them post a link. If possible, reach out to local or relevant publications, like digital magazines. Send them a little press release and ask them to do a short piece on your work. They may be interested in promoting local business, or relevant shops that have an interesting business model.

Maybe you can write up a wikipedia page about yourself, haha. Nothing wrong with proliferating knowledge about yourself or your work.
