How do I better promote my shop?

I don't know much about Etsy except it is the Ebay for people who handcraft their items. I am looking for information on how to better promote my shop and items. If you can offer suggestions you have found work for you and your shop I would greatly appreciate it.

Our store is brand new also. We are trying to get our items out to as many venues as possible without using eBay. I would welcome any suggestions from the more experienced sellers around.
