Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

Not me!

The only Pyrex I've found is lonely lids, some vegetable themed English stuff, and an orange juice jug!

I'm getting really frustrated, I was hoping for the "Summer of Pyrex" where I just found mounds and mounds of lovely pieces in blue, green, yellow, and pink! But....theres been nothing!

I've been finding some of my favorite shops are really gouging price-wise on the Pyrex too, so I've been leaving a lot of it behind! ($7.99 for a dish-washered mixing bowl? Ah no thanks!)

I'm also wondering if the new-ish popularity of Pyrex is also making it harder to find!

What do you think? Are you all finding lots?? :)

I've found quite a bit lately, but individual pieces here and there. I'm trying to be more picky with what I pick up. There was a full set of Early American cinderella bowls at Goodwill the other day, and I left them behind. I actually had them in my cart and then put them back.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

Hello. I'm new to this team.

I have to say that I buy and sell Pyrex. I have found that a lot of the thrift shops are becoming computer savvy are realizing that there is a demand for vintage Pyrex items. However, only a little knowledge of anything can create problems. The problem lies in the fact that they do not understand about how condition affects the value. Some of them will say, if it's Pyrex, it should be that price. Any of us that are "pickers" just need to put it aside, and move on.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

It's really funny sometimes when I find a bunch of Pyrex to look at the pricing. You can tell that different people priced different items. There will be a beautiful Butterprint 4 qt cinderella bowl for $4.99 and right next to it an old, put through the dishwaser, can't really tell it's blue anymore Primary Color for $6.99. uh... huh?
And I have noticed at Savers that they will sometimes inflate their normal pricing on Pyrex. Goodwills near me still see to stick to their same pricing patterns. But I find Savers in general to be all over the map with their pricing.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

You have reminded me that I have noticed something when it comes to pricing, and this is not just with Pyrex. There are a group of stores around my area called Impact thrift. They have grown from having one small thrift store to becoming almost a Wal-Mart of thrift stores for this area. Much like Goodwill, their pricing is fairly consistant. And I think that the reason why is their experience has developed over time and they have pricing guidelines set in place. There are a lot of people don't understand pricing, especially with Pyrex and condition. To them, a bowl is functional, and if it has the Pyrex name on it, then it must have more value then another no name bowl, despite the condition.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

Good points!

I find myself passing by a lot of pieces, and being much more picky like you, Kelly, although that is probably a good thing! My cupboards are bursting!

And excellent thought about the pricing too, assortedstuff, It really makes sense, I've noticed too that Value Village (Savers to you!) can be really all over the place, not just with housewares, but with everything! I know they do have lots of different pricers working back there at any given time!

Has anyone had better luck using Kijiji or Craigslist to find pieces? I've thought about giving that a try in my desperation!

Hello again. You can call me Andy.

I sell other items, not just Pyrex, and when it comes to listing a classified, my rule is to only list and buy large items that won't ship easily in the classifieds. It is sort of outside of my personal comfort zone.. If you buy on Craiglist or Kijiji without seeing the item in your hands or in front of you, there is more risk involved because you don't have a 'larger corporation' protecting your purchase.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

Well hey there Andy! :)

I don't mind using the online classifieds too much, I've had lots of good experiences, the only bad ones being potentially interested people who never turn up again!

I have sold and bought lots of furniture and, like you said large items that would be a royal pain to ship on there, as well as lots of newer baby stuff and that, it's been pretty good! But I don't do business with anyone without my partner there/here with me! You never know, there are some weirdos out there for sure!!!!!

I'm getting curious and thinking about giving it a try after a few bloggers I follow have posted some excellent finds from there! We shall see, I'm getting desperate, need a "fix" LOL

I live in a city with a very large retirement age population too, so I guess my hopes were up that they would have lots of excellent treasures laying around for me! :)

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

Hello! I'll tell my story "quickly". Please excuse me if I ramble..lol.

I am a single father raising my 5 year old son on my own. I don't really want those weirdos, as you say, around my house. My wife passed when my son was a baby. A year later, I was laid off for economic reasons. To that point, I worked in the architectural field for 15 years. It's funny, I was unable to get back to architecture. Once they know that you're a single father, they don't want you, but they won't say it. It's because they want you to work when they need you, and that field is too demanding for a single father. Anyway, here I am selling online. It is working out somewhat, because it allows me to tend to my son, while making ends meet.

Genevieve, I know what you are saying about "needing a fix". Since Memorial Day, my sales seem to be down. I sell on other venues as well, but overall sales are down. Maybe because eveyone is on vacation..? I really don't know, because this is all new to me.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

I am really very sorry to hear about your wife, it is really hard to lose someone so loved and special, my condolences.

I totally dig what you are saying about your son and safety concerns though, you can never, ever be too careful....very true!

Gives me something to think about, maybe if I find something I can't live without, I'll arrange a mall meeting or something! For now, maybe I will just hit the antique shops in town and cross my eyes at their grossly overpriced Pyrex pieces :)

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

Thank you for your condolenses. I am a strong individual now, but occasionally think of what could have been. I'm just glad that I can spend some time with my son watching him grow!

Good luck with your searching! I am blessed with a great selection of shops to choose from in my area, and I have some favorite shops. You wouldn't believe some of the vintage finds that I have found at a few of the shops. I'm going to pick-up my son at pre-school. Have a nice day!

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

I've been finding a few good things, randomly. I stumbled across a pretty mint green baking bowl (?) with a lid at a yard sale the other day and a lovely small blue baking dish with snowflakes on it with the lid intact at the thrift store on Monday. It was exciting! :)

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

I haven't been hunting too much lately, but I did find a nice divided dish with lid the other day in a dark blue, unfortunately the lid does not match but that is okay, the lid is in one of my favorite patterns, crazy daisy I think the name is, in the gold color. Still got a few more boxes to get added to the shop. It is very hit and miss on price at the thrift shops in my city, sometime reasonable, sometimes expensive and I leave it, I find garage sales to be not to bad of a place to find pyrex too.

Re: Who has been finding good stuff this summer?

I am finding less and less quality Pyrex and Fire King lately that is reasonably priced. I did find a couple of pieces the other day though, a Golden Acorn divided casserole dish and a Fire king mug. Both are in pretty good condition and were cheap. The dish doesn't have a lid, though. Don't know if it will sell. I might have to use it.....Darn!
