Hi guys! I was wondering if anybody has any great tips for cleaning stained Pyrex? I found several great pieces over the weekend, but two of them are pretty stained. I know regular washing won't do it, but I don't want to use any kind of abrasive cleaner. Any tips?
Depends on what the stain is and where it is located. For grease stains I use Dawn Power Dissolver, for anything on the interior I use Barkeepers Friend (and occasionally for metal marks on the exterior - have to be careful; depends on the pattern), and for other external stains I use magic eraser.
is Dawn Power Dissolver what used to be called Dawn Degreaser? I used to buy that, in a blue spray bottle, in the dishsoap aisle and cannot find it anywhere anymore. it was great because I cook with olive oil and constantly stain my clothes.
@Jennifer - I assume so. It's a blue spray bottle and works like a mild oven cleaner. I buy barkeepers friends in the cleaning aisle of my supermarket (Kroger); I imagine you can find it at Target, but if not, probably one of your other local big box stores. It comes in a cylindrical tube; like Comet, only gold.
In fact... I've been meaning to get a blog post up about this forever. Maybe this thread will finally give that last motivational shove I need!
So I found that barkeepers friend. Is it any different than comet? I've got a half dozen half open cans of comet in my house, can I just use that for the same purpose? I stood there reading the labels and couldn't figure out what the difference is, but they don't list ingredients on those cleaners.
Could not find the Dawn Power Dissolver. Did find Palmolive Power Degreaser though. Ended up buying a small bottle of Dawn something or other liquid dish washing soap, but put it out above the washing machine for my olive oiled clothes.
You can order it online and have it shipped domestically. Amazon.com stocks it, as does Walmart.com (don't know if Walmart carries it in-store as I don't shop there, but maybe?)
I hear Comet is a LOT more abrasive than BKF and uses a difference active ingredient. BKF also has oxalic acid which is really good for getting rid of those little rust stains that appear on dishes every now and again.
Never thought of using Dawn on cloth oil stains - just thinking of all the clothes I could have saved!
"Dawn takes the toughest grease off your dishes" well if that's the case, I thought, it should take the cooking oil out of my shirt because I am too lazy to wear an apron. I read about that degreaser stuff online somewhere. Bought a bottle, and it saved me many many many a night when I had too much oil in the fry pan and turned the heat up too high.
I buy a can of fume-free oven cleaner for the tougher, older grease stains and it works like a charm. Spray lightly, let it sit for 1 minute and wipe off. It's safe for use on glass and most metals. I'll check on the brand -- can't remember. Absolutely no scrubbing or overnight soaking required!
Those inner food stains are tough though. I have yet to find something that can get that baked-on stuff off.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I bought a Magic Eraser. I'm really into natural cleaning, so it irked me to have to buy it! Haha! But I know I'll never get the stains off without something stronger. If that doesn't work, I'll keep your oven cleaner in mind, Pull Over The Car.
Ive been selling pyrex for years and heres what i do for my rough pieces...for inside of bowl .5 cups of bleach and hot water in a 6-8 hour soak...will take care of 95% of those stains...
as far as outside goes...i have 2 things
1) magic eraser will take care of 50% of markings and stains
2.) theres a pad out there you can buy at a home depot or lowes...its meant to take paint off of chair railing in your house...although meant to remove paint, this 2x3 inch pad can also remove bad build up...you have to use caution because its extremely heavy duty...its ideal on solid color bowl...bowls with patterns like butterprint, early american etc...you must be super careful it will take the print right off...but its amazing on solid colored bowls...primary set, friendship set...etc..
