Etsy is being discussed on The One Show on BBC 1 - talking about 'non-handmade' items / reselling.
People buying so called handmade items, then finding them at B&M stores - for a lot less of course.
Not good for Etsy, though not surprising. This site is now drowning in items that break Etsy's rules- it's much, much worse than it's ever been, and the fact that Amazon chucked off a load of resellers for reviews manipulation is a big impetus for this sudden increase, as they looked for new outlets.
Good! Media coverage seems to be the only thing that moves them. It's ridiculous how non-handmade Etsy is. And vintage? Etsy's never met her.
Thanks for mentioning this, I just watched. Pretty damning, and interesting they highlighted B&M instead of citing the big A as source of so many resold items. Wonder if Etsy will do anything substantive (yes, they claimed to the BBC they're going to spend $40m to clean things up, just like they said they're going to spend $50m to provide better service to buyers and sellers).
At the moment Help and Contact Etsy are both not working! Instead I get the oops there was a hiccup page.
I have been here since 2008, I am so sick of this. nothing get done their raising % , 16 beautiful listings deactivated !!! bad words copal, amber.
Have any of you deactivate some listings you sell at fairs?...only to find them relisted? OOAK resold again here and not had item??
May I ask how you watched it? For the life of me, I can’tfind the actual show! Thank you!!
The seller they highlighted is still selling. I could clearly see their name and yes their items are from B&M!
Well spotted, I didn't notice that.
I re-watched it and there are 3 different sellers shown, all in UK, one with 4768 sales, one with 488, one with 555 sales - this one is '....taking a short break'.
I just watched it. All all the sellers highlighted are still selling. What is worst that that wire shell that was talked about is still being sold by the seller. So Etsy has not removed the offending items at all! What a joke!
I just looked - you can easily find the seller from the TV segment. They are no longer selling the particular shell shelf but they have a load of others from B&M, even using B&Ms own photos, so not exactly being subtle about it.
@KeystoneKreativeShop Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUPOYnT_140
Wow, is there a link available to this?
I've uploaded the clip to YouTube for anyone who can't access it (apologies for the quality, it's a screen recording)...
Shame after being called out on national TV Etsy is being reactive rather than proactive in refunding the buyer featured! I wonder how long it will take Etsy to close the three UK stores highlighted in the clip for reselling?
You only have to take a quick look at the first Etsy shop featured to see they are not handmade items, a large number of the items on their Etsy shop have been purchased from B&M and resold on Etsy for multiples of the original purchase price...
Also good to see Watchdog had more luck contacting Etsy than most sellers seem to have...
Thanks ArtisticAardvarak for the clip.
One of those shops featured lists 81 ‘production partners’!!!
81 !!!!
It was a very well done report--thanks for posting the video. I like that they are encouraging people who were deceived to contact them. It sounds like they may broadcast some more follow-ups. Etsy's statement to them sounds like more of the same old same old.
@TheArtisticAardvark - Thanks for the link.
Well done piece, except for the fact that the reporter seems to have fallen for Etsy's yada yada (at the end) that they're committing millions of $ to fix the problem.
The BBC video is great to watch. Definitely wish we had a show like this in the US.
@BrimstoneHillDesigns thanks for providing that video link. It is sad that it will likely take a lot more of this type of public visibility to the severe issues here. Users have been reporting these things for years and then saying in the forums that Etsy did not take action to remove items or shops. Hopefully they do something with greater speed sometime soon before the reputation of the site is tarnished too widely to recover.
@Phyndz Having watched that journalist on consumer programmes for many years, I’m sure he didn’t fall for any nonsense from Etsy. He will judge Etsy (as will we) by what it does to address the issue. There will probably be a follow up to see if any changes have been made.
The $40 million figure quoted seemed to suggest that Etsy would be spending that in the UK, which it won’t, of course.
it should eventually come up here though not there yet. Not sure people outside UK can watch though
I'm not in the UK, but I get BBC from my cable provider.
