Photography Tips

I know there's heaps of good information on Etsy about product photography, but I thought I'd ask here too....

Some of the shops in this team have some fantastic product photos! Just wondering if any of you care to share your tips for taking great photos?

I've finally invested in a light tent and daylight bulbs and am still working out where to put my two lights in relation to the beads I am photographing! I'm going on a BrisStyle product photography workshop in a couple of weeks so may be able to share a bit from that in due course.

In the meantime would love to know how you all make your photos look so awesome.

But your photos look great!
My photos have been a bit rubbish lately, I need to stop rushing them :/

I have various layers of tissue paper stuck to a window, an upturned white bowl and some strategically placed pieces of card/paper.

Because your stuff is shiny/reflective, if you're trying to knock out that glare you probably need to diffuse the light a bit more. something as simple as placing a sheet of white paper a few inches above the beads, between them and the light source should do the trick :)

Re: Photography Tips

Ah thanks. I think your photos look awesome!

I just find that I take what I think is a good photo, then by the time I load it onto Etsy and see it as a thumbnail it looks dreadful. I want to give my photos and shop some atmosphere, but still be clickable from search results..... Guess that's what we're all aiming for :)

Re: Photography Tips

Hi hilary, your pics look great to me, lovely and crisp, nicely angled and really focus on the beauty of the product. Although mine need to improve I have found natural daylight the best. For me this can mean chasing the decent light round the house with my white card and props etc!! Too harsh light gives glare, so end up kneeling at odd angles to get a good shot depending on light quality. One day i took one item and photographed it in about 7 places, noted it and uploaded to experiment, was interesting. I do also love iphoto in mac editing its great :)

Re: Photography Tips

Thanks Natalie. I guess I'm just a bit of a perfectionist. - always looking to improve.

I know what you mean about walking your products around the house. At one stage I found the best time to take photos was the same time as I was trying to get the children out of the house to school! So frustrating!

Your shop looks great by the way.

Hilary, I think your photos are awesome!
I guess the one thing that helped me was to find a good natural light source in my house in winter. Summer is awesome and there are several rooms I can choose from but winter I have to get the right time of day!
