do you use a mold you bought on etsy? if so do they come out looking like the sample?

Most of the molds I see are displayed with the object used to make the impression in the silicone. I am curious if any of these molds really work.

I use Easy Mold Silicone Putty. A 2 part putty by Castin' Craft. It normally retails for about $33 which seems kinda pricey but a little really goes a long way. I also bought mine at Munros Crafts @ 40% off which made it even more inexpensive. Especially for the time savings. I have made several molds with it. The medical symbol on my nurse figurines and some sports logos that I use on my snowmen ornaments. You have 3 minutes to blend the 2 parts together and press your piece to mold into it. It cures in 25 minutes and is ready to use. The best part is that you can bake your clay directly in the mold. That comes in handy if you have a piece that wants to distort if you try and remove it from the mold. The silicone can withstand up to 400 degrees heat.

I love it.

I have bought molds from Miniature Sweet (a shop on Etsy) and they work very, very well. Also I have purchased mold putty to make my own molds. I t is a little expensive, but it is worth it in the end.

I have never bought a mold (from Etsy or elsewhere) however I do make my own, and generally stuff comes out looking how you'd expect. If it's a particularly large piece, there's a good chance it might warp as you try to remove it uncured, just because it's not yet solid. Therefore I make all my molds so they can survive in the oven, and remove the contents once it's cured if necessary.

The only problem I find is eventually the molds crack with age, especially if you've been baking them,

I use silicone molds and silicone texture pads to get the effects i am looking for. I have had a lot of luck freezing the molds as well as baking them.
