What's the worst polymer clay color?

Ok, we chose our favorite, now tell us about your least favorite color to work with!
What's the grossest color, or what is just impossible to work with?

I have to choose Sculpey's "Ballerina", a pretty pastel pink that has the worst texture ever. It's like working with warm, chewed up gum. Doesn't hold a shape and just smears all over everything! XD

Fimo effects Glitter Red!

I bought some to do a commission, it is evil, I think I went through half a pack of wet wipes, the colour transferred onto everything it touched, never again lol

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

This is silly, but I hate working with white. I always have great ideas for whites and can't bring them to fruition because I can't seem to keep the silly white clay clean. I use gloves, dust my space and work on a ridiculously clean surface, but it doesn't matter. Any tips?

Ugh red, transfers to everything! Premo red is not as bad a Sculpey III red.

On working with white, I keep an exacto knife on hand and everytime I see lint I pick it out and wipe on a damp paper towel.

I hate white, too :) Pain in the butt, I just use pearl instead. Why the pearl is so much easier I do not know but just IS, haha.

I also hate the new sunshine yellow premo and the new blush premo and the glitter ones, yuck, glitter everywhere!

I just use around a ton of babywipes when I'm working with white - and it STILL gets other colours on it sometimes!

Black is the bane of my clay modeling. It sticks to everything and makes such a huge mess.

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

My pain in the butt colors are black and red. I love em, but I hate em. Can't get it off your hands. It colors everything it touches. Leaves their darn colors in my pasta machine no matter how much I thought I wiped it clean. Arrrgh!

I have issues with white due to the fact that it draws everything to is like a magnet. But I did find a solution which may not work for everyone. On my Nurse figurines which are practically all white, I run an xacto knife gently across the surface to remove as much lint and fuzzies as possible before baking. After baking and completely cooled, I again use the xacto knife to gently scrape. It works like sand paper but can get in the nooks and crannies due to the pointed blade. And its pretty fast.

I'm not a big fan of Kato clay. I bought a pack once and it was extremely hard to condition and stank like an old plastic tarp. The smell got all over my hands and the pieces still smelled plastic-y after baking.

As most the others do, I hate white. Can't ever keep it white!

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

Ah I had forgotten about the Kato smelliness!

I had the same experience Alia, I was given some for free, it was super hard and crumbly, and the smell! it was so strong I had to store it in an airtight glass jar because it gave me headaches!

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

I dont like how some of the colors change while baking. some of the reds and fuschias end up darker .

I use a ton of white.. It helps to seperate a small amount, and knead itto remove any fibers or lint left on my hands after baby wiping them, and letting them air dry. .

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

That's what I do too, keep a pile of scrap white clay on the desk for cleaning off hands.

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

Most medium to dark blues (sculpey III, Premo, and Fimo) all seem to bake SUPER dark for me. I found one Fimo that doesn't darken TOO much. So I have a ton of blue that bakes almost black because it took me forever to get it right. :(

And I hate white also.

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

I also use a TON of baby wipes but I just switched brands, and all they do is leave fuzz on my hands. Is there a specific type of baby wipes you have to buy?

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

Rachael, I use whatever baby wipes are on special offer, never seem to have problems with fuzz, but you could try Huggies fragrance free if you can get them in the US. They are like wet grease proof paper, great for cleaning hands, useless on a baby's bum!

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

I just use the supermarket brand baby wipes as I find them better than the 'posh' brands and the scent less offensive if scented. Tescos and asda ones in the uk are nice.

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

White is so difficult to keep clean, I agree, its my worst clay to work with. I usually just sandpaper off any of the dirt that STILL manages to attach itself to the clay.

Reds and dark pinks are a pain because they stain your hands so badly that you cant work with another colour till you've scrubbed them clean.

I have a lovely shade of light blue that i've just bought, its fimo effect, its just so soft, I cant make anything with it! :(

Re: What's the worst polymer clay color?

I love purple but have had terrible luck with the Sculpey and Premo purples. They are always crumbly and I can't use them. I don't like the shades, anyway, so have been mixing my own.

Rachael, I use alcohol wipes from the drugstore. Rite Aid has them in cylinders like Wet Ones and they are $3.99 (regular price) for 40. I like the package design because I can use one and then stick it back in to stay moist, rather than just throwing it away. That way I use each one 2 or 3 times. I recently found them on sale for $3 for a cylinder and bought 2. They last me quite a while because I reuse them and I don't need them that often. In my store, they are on the bottom shelf with the bandages.
