Sticky Clay Problem

Hi all,

Just joined this team. I've been working with clay for a while and have just run into a problem. I use sculpey clay, bake and then seal with the sculpey brand satin varnish. Just recently a few of my pieces became sticky, not the whole batch just a few. I tried re-coating figuring i may not have mixed the varnish enough but no success, still sticky. I tried rebaking them but they are still slightly tacky. Anyone have a fix for this or are these pieces doomed?

Thanks so much,
MB

Re: Sticky Clay Problem

I had that happen with one varnish - I waited and waited and it never got untacky again. Although not with any Sculpey brand varnish, it usually tends to be pretty good.

I was going to suggest rebaking but you said you already. You got me on why it never lots it's stickines. You might try rebaking again for about 30-45 minutes but if not it might be a lost cause.

Re: Sticky Clay Problem

I've had that problem with Sculpey brand satin glaze. I never figured out anything to fix it. I just glazed over it with my Fimo glaze…

Sorry I don't have any useful advice. I stopped using sculpey glaze for that exact reason.

Re: Sticky Clay Problem

been there, done that//unfortunately to over 200 pieces! I will never use anything but Ace brand spray lacquer again, and only at under 50% humidity and above 75 degrees F. Getting good sealer adhesion on polymer clays is like make candy, never do it on a rainy day!

Re: Sticky Clay Problem

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I re-baked them (again) at a higher temp for a lot longer and they finally stopped feeling tacky. Phew. :)
