Nail Polish on Polymer ?

I have recently seen a technique using pail laying on water.. You dip things in and get a marble affect, I am wondering if it would work with polymer clay....

Have anyone used nail polish on they're clay and did you encounter any problems ? ?

Thanks

Re: Nail Polish on Polymer ?

yes, I use nail polish for the finish on the back of my earrings. important: avoid direct sunlight or heat, the nail polish could get very soft and be vulnerable for scratches... and don't use too much nail polish, only a thin layer.

best, lara

Re: Nail Polish on Polymer ?

I have heard that over time the chemicals in the nail polish eat away at the clay, so I am not sure if it is the best idea.

My gut feeling is that Michelle is right. So many things interact with polymer clay and I think you'd end up with a mess. I saw a video showing that technique for nail polish, too. Maybe you could do something similar with alcohol inks -- I haven't tried using them with my polymer clay yet so I don't know if that would work. Or try applying some nail polish to a piece of scrap clay and see what happens. Just hang onto it for a couple of months before making anything to sell or give away so you know what the outcome will be.

I recently used drafting dots (small circles of not-terribly-sticky masking tape for holding drawings down on a drawing board) to attach pairs of unfinished earrings to each other. After they sat on my workbench for a couple of months, I had an extremely sticky mess. It took a lot of nail polish remover, dish soap, and scrubbing to get the sticky stuff off. I probably should have just thrown the earrings away but I was getting ready to take some stuff to a local shop on consignment and needed as much stock as possible.

Re: Nail Polish on Polymer ?

I tried coating polymer clay pieces in clear nail polish when I was first starting out. With some brands, it worked just fine. I still have those items (from, like, 6 years ago) and the nail polish hasn't affected the clay. But other brands of polish made the clay super sticky and never dried.
If you do decided to go the nail polish route, I would definitely try it on a test piece first.

Re: Nail Polish on Polymer ?

You should avoid using nail polish because it will get sticky and messy and may turn yellow after awhile (personal experience).
I definitely recommend the Sculpey glaze that they sell at Micheal's next to the clay. I've tried several ways of glazing and Sculpey hasn't gotten sticky as of yet! Just make sure to stir it for about a minute before you use it.

Re: Nail Polish on Polymer ?

From what I've heard the only really safe thing on polymer clay is an acrylic - i.e. Future Floor polish.
