Mineral Makeup?

Hello! New here....Just wondering if anyone has tried using loose mineral eye shadow to embellish clay. Do you put it on prior to baking? Wet or dry?
Thanks!

Re: Mineral Makeup?

Haven't used 'mineral' make up, but these beads here were made with pink pearl clay, and translucent clay brushed with some of my left over 'blush'.

You can also try some of the cheap eye shadows they sell at the dollar store instead of mica powder.

Beautiful! How do you get them so shiny?

Re: Mineral Makeup?

I sanded them in 4 stages using 400, 800, 1000 and 1500 grit wet dry sand paper. Then buffed them with a buffing wheel. I usually save that for when I want to catch up on tv shows on the DVR. The buffing wheel I bought at Harbor Freight for about $50 but I know some people use a dremel tool. I have one but haven't tried it yet.

I have also gotten a wonderful glossy shine using Kato liquid polyclay. Brush a thin coat on your baked item and use a heat gun on it until it goes clear and shiny. But I need more practice with it. It creates a beautiful clear shiny finish which reminds me of resin, but sometimes (and I don't know why yet) my stuff will be left feeling...not tacky/sticky...but 'grippy' like a rubber ball. Like its got traction. That could be great if your trying to make clay covered pens and you want to make them grip-able. lol

If I ever figure it out I will be sure to let everyone know because the shine in my opinion is equal to all that sanding and buffing in much less time!

Re: Mineral Makeup?

another way to save time on sanding - If you have a large amount of beads or items to sand, and you don't need them in less that 7 days you can put them in a rock tumbler. I start out with a medium grit tumbling compound for about 2-3 days. Rinse completely. Then another 2-3 days with the pre-polish tumbling compound. It works great. You will then be ready to buff. You can tumble up to 3 lbs or in the case of clay approximately 1-2 cups of clay items.

If interested you can read more about it on my blog
