Baking you Clay in the Microwave

I recently discovered this new trick.. baking your polymer clay in the microwave!
I am not sure if it is any better or worse than baking it in the oven, but it's worth a try!

To do this, take your clay and put it in a microwave safe bowl. Fill the bowl with water so it is completely covering your clay. Microwave the bowl for about 3-6 minutes, depending on the size of your project!

Have any of you heard of this before? How well did it work for you?

Re: Baking you Clay in the Microwave

I'd always read that you should never bake clay in the microwave. Possibly a bad chemical reaction.

But I'd also think it would be very difficult to control the temperature at which the clay was baking using that method.

Where did you find this method?

I have not heard of this technique but i am very afraid! lol! I would hate to spend precious time making a clay creation to see it be ruined trying something new. I'd test it out first if I was you.

I would also be concerned about the lack of temperature control... I suppose you could adjust your power settings, though. I don't know, the whole idea makes me nervous, and it's not like it's difficult to just bake the clay in the oven.

Re: Baking you Clay in the Microwave

Temperature control is a big issue with this though this doesn't sound much different than boiling beads which I've also heard of.

I have a dedicated toaster oven for polymer clay and honestly it's the best addition to my studio ever. You can buy a small brand new one for about $35 and you can probably pick up a used one on craigslist or at a garage sale for even less if not free.

Re: Baking you Clay in the Microwave

Not a good idea. They say it's unsafe to do so. Also no temp control. I would advise against it for your safety.
