Tips on how to sell more

I thought it would be useful for all of us to share our "strategies" on promoting and selling paper goods (as well as everything else we have on our shops).

So I invite you to share your selling experiences... the number of sales you've got, the ways you promote your shops and everything else you might find useful.

I had 3 sales (right after I opened my shop). I didn't know much about promoting it, but I guess I listed a bunch of items and it made them more viewable.
Then I took a break when my son was born in March and now I'm back i force :) with new sections on my shop and all.

What I know is that you have to be very active spreading the word. I'm an old Blogger and I told all my friends about my shop also.
I'm facebooking about it to reach a "new audience"

But what I think is important is to keep all the contents from all these places "fresh"... I mean don't just copy paste from one place to the other. I am giving more "technical" details on Etsy items and more personal descriptions and creative processes, emotions and likes on my blog.
I use FB mainly as a place to keep all my creations (like an Album).

What I read more was to use the "right" tags so people searching will see your items. Just put yourself in the searcher's shoes and think what they might "google" :).

Oh, another thing I am doing is putting my etsy shop, blog and facebook links in my e-mail signature... who knows? Some people are curious.

Another method (which I didn't try yet) is to go to creative fairs and grab a bunch of flyers presenting your work where you can add your shop link.

And the newest "buzz"...the coupons. I am offering 20% off to my return customers and my FB followers on all my shop items!
I don't know very much aboout Etsy myself but what I know (common sense) is that you MUST take care of your old customers. They already know you! Make sure they are always satisfied and go the extra mile in assuring a nice package or a free gift every time they purchase.
I am always adding a little "gift" which won't affect the weight of the package.

I think that's all... if I remember something else I'll come back and post it.

Happy selling everyone!
Laura

Re: Tips on how to sell more

These are awesome tips Laura! Thank you!

This week I hit my 1000 sale!!! Yay!

What works for me here on Etsy is listing something new (or renew a sold item) EVERYDAY...this way my shop is always within the first pages of search! I got many custom orders for weddings and other events because of this!

Tags are also an important key...I totally agree with what Laura mention in her post above...Don't underestimate the "power" of TAGS!!!...lol...

My shop contains mostly paper flowers...so in my tags...I put "scrapbooking - supplies - supply - embellishments....and now...with the wedding season...I added "wedding" in some of my listings!

Re: Tips on how to sell more

These are great tips! I haven't made any sales yet :( but I really just started. I am worried about paying to list new items all the time when I haven't made any sales, and then having a completely negative profit after all of my efforts, but maybe I shouldn't worry about that, and just keep making new things and listing them in my shop every day?

Re: Tips on how to sell more

I know Etsy is "scary" sometimes... and seeing how huge this community is might lower your self esteem...
You shouldn't let negativism hit. How do you know your item doesn't stand out from 1000 more? Maybe someone out there is looking just for that.

You need courage when listing... it's an assumed risk. But it's like that in "real" businesses to.
Maybe it helps to compare it to a real shop you would open and you'll immediately realize the costs are much lower here :).
Once you have your first sales you'll get more courage!

Good luck! And do't forget to PROMOTE!

Re: Tips on how to sell more

Hi everyone!

I just saw on another team they were discussing about Facebook advertising...and I thought this might interest some of you too. I'll tell you what I've done on my FB:

I still don't know how to work my way on Facebook ... but try this: if you have a personal page, just create an album "showing off" your handmade items...even those that aren't listed on your Etsy. Then share it with your friends. I just did that and I got an amazing response.
I guess people don't like it very much when you "impose" a shop (BUY ME things) to them. But if you do it as a "show off" of what you can do, some of them will hopefully remember you and come back if they saw something they like.

Happy selling! :)

Re: Tips on how to sell more

I definitely agree with posting one thing every day, when possible! I haven't been on Etsy long, but I have noticed that I do not get many views at all during times that I am not posting anything. When I have time to add one item a day, I have much better viewing!!

Thanks for the other ideas, Laura! Being new to online selling, I'll take any help I can get!

Re: Tips on how to sell more

This is such a nice thread, I enjoyed reading what you all had to say! I'm new to Etsy too and it is indeed scary! Its relieving to see I have the right ideas, I was planning to list a few things over the course of a few days rather than dumping them all in on one day!

Yes, yes I see it everywhere: The importance of tags! I try so hard with my tags. And when in doubt? Go see what tags other successful shops are using! Its my strategy :P

Re: Tips on how to sell more

I find tagging difficult. I will admit to struggling with them continually. For instance, I listed 3 items tonight and none of them have had even 10 views. Could you elaborate on the paper goods aspect of tagging? Thanks!

Re: Tips on how to sell more

Hi everyone. I am new to this team, well any team really. Just signed up today for 2 so hopefully it will help me out with my shop. Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I got some free business cards from vistaprints.com and I have my etsy & personal website on it and anytime I make anything I send a few cards to those customers and when at a party for my kids I give them out to some of the parents. Not sure if it is helping me but they were free and I dont thinkit could hurt, if not now but one day they will look and buy. Good luck to eveyone! :)

@ threeofakindmunchkin: You used Vistaprint? I was going to use them but found some bad stuff about them on the web and it scared me away. They were charging people's accounts without consent..? Be careful! But if it is working out for you, maybe Ill reconsider...

In case some people dont know, use craftopolis.com to track people who visit your shop and see what tags they use to find your items! Very insightful.

Re: Tips on how to sell more

jjjArts: I have been using them for a few years now. My husband does sprinklers on the side and I used them for cards & flyers for him. I have never had a problem and really like them. I usually get what is free and then just pay shipping each time. So every 5-7 months I order new cards for one of us. LOL gotta do what will save you money :)

Thanks for the link as well. Never knew we could track it. Will be trying that out today.

Re: Tips on how to sell more

Some great tips! I'm going to go back and put better tags on some of my items. Some of my earliest listings have no tags at all, or only two or three.

Someone asked about how to tag--I usually use prominent colors in the tag, and any words the card may have.

Re: Tips on how to sell more

Don't be afraid of VistaPrint. I've ordered a few things from them over the years and never had any trouble. If you're interested in print companies for cards and such, also check out overnightprints.com. They are comparable in price to VistaPrint, and their customer service is fantastic. (I wish they were paying me to say this, but they're not. Darn!)
