Do Framed Items Sell Better?

I want to make some paper elephant-type nursery wall decor things. I have them all planned out and know they would look great hanging on a wall, but I'm wondering if I should go ahead and frame them or not. The problem is, they will end up being 12X12 inches square. 12X12 is a difficult frame to find, and they're expensive to buy. So it will obviously drive up the cost of the finished item.

In your experience, do framed items sell better/faster? Or should I just leave it unframed and let the customer find their own?

Re: Do Framed Items Sell Better?

I have no experience in actually selling framed items, however in my opinion a suitable frame on some wall art helps the customer visualise the final offering! And could well aid sales. Most artwork i buy tends to be framed - i see it as part of the art work itself. Many people also don't want the hassle of finding the right sized frame to put a piece of art in and prefer to buy framed pictures as the artist visualises it.

On the other side however, many people often like a piece of work but are put off by the frame as its not to their taste. If its possible, perhaps provide both options and just get one framed to start with and see if it sells. After all, this is the method adopted by many artists in galleries: Offering a framed image and a cheaper mounted print, which also serves to suit both pockets!
Hope my thoughts help your decision!
