Marketing Your Magic

Over the last few years, as my own shop has had more and more success, I have found myself coaching other magical practitioners on how to get the most out of Etsy.

Witches, sorcerers, Druids, Heathens, Thelemites (anyone who is specifically trying to sell products/services related to magic and non-mainstream religion) -- well, we might have some different marketing concerns than other crafters. Or are they truly the same sorts of obstacles, in the end?

I'm really curious about what other magical folks are doing to help boost their magico-spiritual businesses. Do you have any tips, tricks, advice, or warning? Do you have a spiel that you give to friends just starting out? Do you have a pep talk or words of wisdom for folks stuck in the doldrums?

My intention is to gather perspectives from lots of different shop owners for a series of blog posts about marketing magical goods/services. You can respond here or PM/convo me. I'd also be interested in having guest posts on the blog from folks who want to go into more depth on a particular topic.

This project is intended to help us all -- newbies and veterans alike.

Re: Marketing Your Magic

i have worked in a metaphysical store for many years as well as selling here. one thing i have noticed is that to buy your product, people need to trust you. that can only happen if they can get to know you somehow. so show your face, be interactive, communicative and ask for testimonials for face book. Also, energy workers of all types use and respect the products we make. so don't just limit yourself to the traditional magic variations. i know plenty pf psychics, reiki practitioners, massage therapists etc. that use "intention" or spell candles, incense, jewelry etc. just don't limit yourself.

Re: Marketing Your Magic

This is a great post, I am interested to read/learn more. I have just started out here on Etsy, and have yet to sell anything. I have looked at tutorials as to why your stuff might not be selling, and I know this is a niche market. Patience is not something I'm rolling in. I will keep plugging and trying to improve but more positive feed back would be a huge boost. I was in retail sales for many years, and know how to sell in person. Get it int their hands, give them ownership, list features and benefits, etc.... Selling online is a totally different ball game. Also, selling my own art is a lot more personal to me than selling furniture. I don't want to over or under value it.

Re: Marketing Your Magic

I don't sell magickal supplies or items, but am a customer of these things.
I'm drawn to well stocked shops, sharing of knowledge and use of skill. As has been said already, trust is a must. Hehe. Many of my favorite practioners and sellers have a space (website, blog) that talks about their views and what they do. I loooove seeing the intention and practical crafting skill that goes into what we do!

Once in a while, you'll catch shops using photos from well known companies. Or even other Etsy sellers. What a turn off! Now I distrust your expertise and skill completely.

I *do* offer tarot readings in the shop. Trust, skill and personallity are all aspects I try to bring out to clients. Posting testimonials, connecting to people curious about divination, sharing infomation on the tarot for people doing their own readings.
