An item I wouldn’t normally list here...

This is just to give the heads up to those who might be interested.

I have made a reserved listing for an item that I would normally consider to be too big and expensive to bother listing here. It’s a reserved listing for someone who saw some of my work in an exhibition them explored further and found this item on my website. I haven’t got a shopping facility on my website, so I list items in my Etsy shop when requested just to make the payments easier and so that people can get a better look with close ups etc.

I’m just mentioning this here because there might be people interested in seeing an example of my larger work. Just don’t get tempted with any impulse purchases! It’s intended for one person only, and if all goes well, it won’t be here long....

Anyone got any feedback about selling more expensive artwork on Etsy?

Hey Lynn,

So you've been assuming only inexpensive art sells on etsy?

Well that true for the most part BUT not at all entirely.

I've sold work close to $500, I know others have as well. I even sold a large piece mounted on board that had a high shipping cost. I always thought if it sold it would be a local sell, but instead I crated it up and shipped it off!

Don't underestimate your customers!

That's my 2 cents!

Also, I view etsy and not just a place to sell to individual customers--but also as a place to get "discovered" so I would definitely put my larger more ambitious work online--make sense?

your thoughts team?

Yes you are quite right Kelly.

I have noticed a gradual increase in the average unit value of my sales.

I have been thinking for quite a while now that I really ought to get round to listing at least one “statement piece”. It’s partly laziness – having to work out the shipping costs of larger pieces. Having to post this larger one will force me to face that! So many of my larger works are just one cm too long to qualify for a “medium” package and I would have to charge considerable more for a “large” package.

It’s also probably an age thing, but I have only recently got my head around purchasing items online myself! (I still won’t buy clothing online).
I’ve worked quite hard to compensate for the fact that a purchaser here can’t pick up and feel the artwork. But even now each sale is still a delightful surprise to me. And a delightful shock when someone has purchased 4 or 5 items in one go...

I shall have to pull my finger out and get listing a few for items...

Ohh, I am interested to hear other success stories with selling larger pieces. I have a few larger ones listed and have sold (very few), but have not listed as many as I could because of the shipping issue. I can easily ship 8x10 and up to 9x12 without any additional trouble trying to figure out shipping costs. How do you send the larger pieces? Just a large box or???

Re: An item I wouldn’t normally list here...

I've sold a couple of $700 prints here on Etsy, so it's not out of the question. But it is getting more difficult to attract knowledgeable collectors who are in the market for ORIGINAL prints, as compared to "reproductions", which seem to make up for the bulk of artwork selling on this site. But, nevertheless, a couple of deep pocket collects found me here, so I would absolutely list high-ticket items. Ya' just never know who is going to come across your work and can't live without it!
