Shipping

How do I go about shipping? I live in NJ and I don't know if it would be more cost effective to do flat rate shipping with usps or to try something else. How is it that certain shops are only charging about $5 fr shipping? Would it be better for me to buy a scale and print labels at home? Please help!! lol

Re: Shipping

Josie,

First of all, what do you ship? I didn't see things in your shop. But no matter, there are some basics to know.

Yes. Buy a scale. It is a very important part of your business. With a scale, you can almost never walk into a post office again, saving you all the time and frustration that an extra errand can bring.

Now that you have your scale, wrap one of your items in all the stuff you would wrap it in to ship, then weigh it. Now go here: http://postcalc.usps.gov/ and figure out how much it will cost to ship priority.

Why ship priority? Well, you don't have to, but it gives you a tracking number, free packing supplies and more protection through Paypal if you use it. Plus, you make your customers happy by using a quicker service. You get a discount if you print your labels online and you can't print first class labels online.

Now check out the difference between flat rate and weighted prices. Decide if the ease of flat rate makes the (sometimes) extra cost worth it to you.

From there, you can determine your shipping costs.

Once you make a sale, you go to the paypal link and it will lead you through the steps to print that label. Put the address inside the package (as per my mother, who was a post master) and affix the label well on the outside. Tuck it into mail box and you are done!

So much more convenient than the old way of going to the PO and having them weigh it!

Re: Shipping

Patricia, thank you soo much for your response! You are correct, I don't have any items in my shop ( I make crocheted items ex. apparel, jewelry, afgans) and that is mainly from having a severe case of cold feet. I really didn't know where or how to start but I think I'm ready to tackle my store and my goals for this year!
Right now I'm working on my shop policies and appearance but I was confused about shipping. I'm not going to lie, this is a little intimidating for me but I have to put my fear aside and jump in head 1st! Besides, I'm 4 months pregnant and could really use sme extra cash. LOL

Re: Shipping

Josie,

It takes awhile, usually, for people to make their first sale. I would suggest you get something up to start the process and while you wait for someone to tall in love with your items, you can finish policies.

Also, if you haven't, do your homework. Find other shops with many sales and a good customer feedback and look at what they do. No sense in reinventing the wheel!

Re: Shipping

Patricia, can you add insurance to Priority mail, is it necessary? You make a good argument for priority, I just opened and set all my shipping for first class with insurance (silver jewelry etc.), have had the post office lose a package before. Josie, I used a postal scale and USPS on line to estimate a "mock" package, then took it to the post office for confirmation and I was right on, so the scale is worth it. I just opened, and I feel a little overwhelmed and intimidated too!

Re: Shipping

Jennifer,

You can add insurance to priority, but I am not sure it makes sense. First, the insurance is only in case something happens that the PO had control over. And you have to be able to prove that you had the insurance, and you might have to prove that it was the POs fault.

Priority gives you tracking, so where the item is. It also gives you proof of when you shipped it, etc. It is, in essence, almost the same as having insurance, maybe even better.

My mom was a post master, and she knows well the problems with the PO, but in the 12 years I have been shipping all over the world, I have never had a package lost that I could trace back to the PO. If you have priority mail, they keep track of it for you, so if they lose it, they can't blame anyone else!

Re: Shipping

I wanted to add some information to Patricia's original post when she mentioned how first class shipping can not occur on Paypal. The USPS site also does not allow first class shipping to be done at home as well. However, it can be accomplished through Endicia if you have a scale and dymo printing machine. I personally prefer this method because the cost of the printer may be high initially but I save on the printer ink since the machine is based on inkless technology. I also use the labels and this printing machine for my own personal organization. In the end, the labels are costly to buy if you go to the dymo site, but we all know other alternatives are always found online. hehe. Feel free to always contact me with any questions about first class shipping or this method.
