Naming your items...Good or Bad?

I was just thinking to myself as I was listing an item, would a buyer be turned off by a product being named already?

In my case, would my naming the dogs cause customers to emotionally detach themselves from the product since it's not their dog's name (or even gender)?

What do you think?

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

Well the rule of thumb is to make tittles like a buyer would search for them (If that makes sense) . Not too many people are going to look up 'Spike The Dog', so just use the buyer in side you. It is not a bad idea to name them, just maybe in the item description, like 'This dog looks to me like a Spike, what about you?' Hope this helps!

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

Let me clarify. I'm keeping the the titles the same, but in each listing there's a story such as:

"Max is a purebred Doberman that cuts an imposing figure. But don't be intimidated, he's really a sweetie at heart. This athletic canine would stand out make its prescience known in any home. "

I'm wondering, if I'm a Doberman owner. Would I be turned off because I don't want an already named Dobie. I want my Fido or Fifi. I just finished reading this book on buyer psychology so maybe I'm being paranoid.

Oh I am sorry, that is my fault. I apologize. Then yes, I would love to read a story about the dog you made. I enjoy reading the story behind products I admire. I would not be turned off, but that is just me. I hope I helped this time.

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

Hi K,
I think the answer is Yes and No. I am a lab owner and so if I was going to buy something in lab form, if it was already named I would not personally purchase it, it would take away the personal centiment I would have wanted in purchasing it. And no if you do not own a pet, and just like the sweet storyline, and adorable new friend.
My suggestion, keep the story line and add something to the affect of, all this little guy is in need of is a good name and good home. etc. I'm no pro.. just my two cents.. love your items!!

Pj, made some good points. I guess it really up to the shop owner. Do what you want to do.

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

Oh, a Lab would be so cute! So I have a question for you guys:

I would like to start making Knitted Kitties, but am a little worried to start. They take about a day to make. I don't know how much to charge and like with K Jones, I don't know if I should put a story behind the product. What do you think???

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

A story is always a cute idea, it helps you personalize the product more in some cases, and everyone loves puppies and kitties!! I say you try one or two, I don't think you should over make a product until it proves to be a bang.. that way your investment doesn't run you broke, and you don't get stuck with lots of product sitting around. Price depends on you, wish I could help, I have been questioning some of my prices, but think I should be patient and give it time. A price can always be changed :-)

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

Thanks PJ! After I make my first one, I will try it out. Do you think it should be made-to-order or just have 2 or 3 on hand? Thanks again!

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

Sure thing!!
You can go either way, maybe make 2 and then see what comes of it. Everything is worth a try once.

Re: Naming your items...Good or Bad?

First of all, thanks for all the input! I'll edit the listings a bit tomorrow (it's bedtime for me) to see if anything makes a difference.

The Knitted Kitties sound like a really cute idea! I haven't even seen them and I'm interested. I agree with listing one or two to see how they do first.
