Window box

Ok I have been trying to find one of those window thingies you sit in the window and allows the cat to sit outside. Anybody know where I might get one? All I keep finding is no longer available.

The window sill here is small and Possum and her butt push the screen out.

Re: Window box

I don't know how much "space" Possum needs, but here's a pretty inexpensive one at Petco:

I've never bought one of these, but they always look like a great place for a kitty to "work."

Re: Window box

I thought about one of those but she would still knock the screen out. More or less she knows she can now. But this is what I was looking for.

I may have to try and make one... LOL Ought to be interesting.

Re: Window box

I just checked to see where you live - but you're on the wrong end of the country to borrow my brother. He made something even more ambitious for Houdini. If you know anyone with handyman skills, show him/her the photos and I bet they could come up with something.

Re: Window box

Yeah, weird! They used to be all over the place, different styles- some had glass, some were like a cage... Now when I do a search all I find is ones that are out of stock or plans to make your own. I was thinking that if you could find a used cage (a bird, small animal or dog crate would work) with the bottom dimensions about the same size as your window opening, you could make a "floor" for it our of 1/4- 1/2" plywood and make one that way. All you'd have to do is remove the bottom of the cage (and wire the doors shut), place the opening of the bottom against the open window, secure it to the window frame, then put the wood piece (cut to size) as a new floor...

I may not be describing it very well, but it should be easy to do.

Re: Window box

Those things are cool! Much more fun than a window ledge. I also saw lots of stuff offering the instructions for making one. I guess you'd have to somehow really secure it to the window so nobody flopped outside...

Re: Window box

sarangus you might just have the ticket! Maybe a rabbit cage! and make a small frame under it like people use to do for air conditioners.

Yes, some bracing underneath would be a good idea.

Re: Window box

Like around a air conditioner. Would set in the window. Maybe if had wheels or sumthing you could just roll it out to shut it. Or if it is light enough you just pick it up.

Re: Window box

Do any of the pictures of the no-longer-available ones show how you'd close the window?

Another thought: The ad you posted said something like "not currently available". Have you contacted any of the companies to see if they'll be carrying them in the future? Maybe they're just so popular they've sold out.

Re: Window box

No one knows if they will get them again. There are some you just pop in and close the window to keep it from falling and some you screw in . Those the window closes in front of the box. Maybe there is a bird thingie... I have some more looking to do...lol

that way she could sit and watch to birds up close!

Re: Window box

I like that design better than the one where the cat is actually OUTSIDE (in case the think collapses, the kitty falls inward), but I don't know what Possum is really after. Maybe she needs to be sitting at the computer with her mom!

She always as able to lay in the windows before and feel like she was outside. No she is stuck in one room and can't lay there because the screens won't stay in.

And noooooo on the sitting by the puter..lol Lord she has been walking over it all day like...oh am I disturbing you?

Re: Window box

Maybe Possum would like a screened-in porch! That sounds perfect. We don't have one, but maybe with a little wood, a few nails...

Re: Window box

Well heck I like one too. She is only allowed in my room, the people don't like cats. So I don't think they build a room for her. I am sure they let me build one though...lol

Re: Window box

How can ANYONE not like cats? I know there are a few people out there... like most of my relatives! Just try to tell them a cute cat story. Boy, do they change the subject quickly!

Re: Window box

LOL I don't know they are weird people I think. I think sometimes it because you cant control a cat. Well that is what Possum said anyway.

My theory (about uncontrollable cats, not weird people) is that it comes down to the fact that cats are instinctively solitary hunters, while dogs are instinctively pack animals. For a properly-treated dog, the owner is the leader of the pack and it instinctively feels that the leader should call the shots (dachshunds evidently have some cat blood in them). Cats, OTOH, are instinctively independent and call their own shots - they wouldn't know any other way to act.

One of the most pitiful things I've ever seen was a "trained cat" act at a circus. Not the "big cats" you usually see at circuses, but regular household cats. Not only did it give new meaning to the truism that you can't herd cats, but one poor cat was put on top of a tall pole and was supposed to jump down into some water below. You could tell the poor thing was **terrified** (this was a very tall pole), but since there was no other way for it to get down it finally did jump. My heart just broke for it. I'm glad to say there was no trained cat act in that circus the next year.

I don't like circus'. One of my wort memories is explaining to my son at 6 why the elephant was swaying back and forth chained to a pole.

Re: Window box

I saw the Moscow Circus years ago when I lived in Houston. They had trained housecats. It was completely amazing. The cats in these particular acts looked like they were okay with it. Otherwise, I would have had to jump out of my seat to rescue them!
