Introductions

I'm a 2D and 3D artist, and now mask maker. I've been making masks for about twelve years. Working in New Orleans was what inspired me to start making masks. All the different characters were like sculptures for the face. It really appealed to my sculpture background. I work primarily in feathers, flowers, crystal, sequins, but have been known to branch out to non-traditional materials. Every mask is an individual, someone you can become. I'm fascinated by the artform.

Re: Introductions

We have just recently started making masks. Our first mask was made about two years ago, and we were hooked! All of our masks are made from 100% veg tan leather. They are hand designed, formed, stitched, embossed and stained/painted by us. Our masks are uniquely different from one another. We have made a raven mask, a lion, dragons, plague doctor, and many others. We only have a few listed on Etsy at the moment but we have all of them on our facebook if you are interested in seeing them. Here is a link to our shop and our facebook. If you want to 'like' or add us, send us a message and we will return the favor.

Re: Introductions

Hey there. I'm a sculptor throught and throught. My artistic holy grail has been the creation of a "perfectly hollow" object. Making the interior and exterior one. It was only natural for me to then put these objects onto my body. My current process is the sewing of spandex fabic over steel wire frames.

Re: Introductions

Hi All,
I am brand new to the group. I am primarily a 2D artist, and recently completed a series of 24 Luchador Masks. Luchadors are Mexican Wrestlers, and their masks fascinate me. I am happy to be a part of this creative group, and look forward to seeing your work.

Re: Introductions

Hi, I don't make masks, but I am in awe and inspired by those who do. The uniquely beautiful artwork that a mask displays can tell a story, transport people into fantasy and mythical realms, and so much more. They can show emotions while hiding the person's face underneath.

The masquerade ball in the movie Labyrinth is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time.

I have created a Pinterest board just featuring masks and masquerade items and will happily pin and promote the wonderful pieces I see in this team.

It can be seen here:

Re: Introductions

I am a Mask maker and Theatre artist. I love masked performance. Commedia Dell'Arte, Character Mask, Basil/Larval, and Expressionist mask work are right up my alley. I performed at Dell'Arte International and completed the PTP Physical Theatre Year Intensive. I only recently began making my own masks, first paper mache', then neoprene. If you have any tips on how to get clay smoother and how to sad out imperfections on neoprene, please let me know!

Re: Introductions

Hi! I'm new to Etsy and to mask-making, but I've loved all kinds of artistic creations for years. I make my masks out of polymer clay and then decorate them with paint, fabric, feathers, flowers, beads, braided trim, rhinestones, etc. My interest in masks began when I fell in love with Phantom of the Opera a couple of years ago . . . it was just recently that I realized I could make my own masks! Anyway, I just set up my site about an hour ago:

Looking forward to meeting everybody!

Re: Introductions

I'm also new to etsy and mask making!

I work with veg tanned leather and occasionally exotics like stingray. My love of masks came from my love of theater. I've worked with a local school as production assistant and makeup artist. During our production of Phantom of the Opera in 2011, it became clear that the mask ordered for our Phantom did not fit. Since I had already life cast him for custom latex prosthetics, the costume designer suggested that I make his mask. I did and it was beautiful! I just wish I had made it from leather, but I really didn't understand the process. I didn't make another mask till last October, when I started playing with leather. Well.... I'm hooked! The learning curve was steep and fast. I learned by trial, error and online tutorials! I can't believe the difference in quality between my first mask and what I create now. And I can't wait to see what my muse will prod me to create tomorrow! Currently, I'm working on a full Bioshock Inspired line of masks, but my style ranges from elegant to rugged with everything in between.

Here are two samples of my work... Hope you enjoy them!

Re: Introductions

Hello everyone xD, I'm am so glad I found this group. My name is Nik I have been playing fashion designer/mask maker for years. I blame Labyrinth and Legend for starting all this haha. My trip to New Orleans a few years back took me from playing with it, to selling my masks in stores in my hometown. Found etsy little over a year ago and here I am xD

Re: Introductions

I haven't been working with masks for all that long yet, but I find that, while exceptionally time-consuming, mask making is also rather addictive ^__^
I am an in-between student (just finished undergrad, looking towards grad school). All of my leatherworking/my etsy store in general is really just a hobby for me rather than a serious profession. It's fun, and I can usually cover my expenses, hahaha ^_^;
Here is an example of a mask I made recently:

Re: Introductions

Hey everyone, glad to have found this group! My name is Wylie and I'm an artist who just in the past year got into mask making. I'm really interested in working with animal hides and reclaiming damaged or lower-quality animal faces that no one else wants and making them into something special for people to wear. I've studied jewelry and metalsmithing at college (Massart grad) but I'm a bit more on the body and wearable art bit right now.
