Credit Card Scam for Account Verification

Hi All,

New to Etsy as a seller, but thankful for my Cyber Security background. It's most likely been around for a while in some form or another, but I've had a credit card scammer posing as "Etsy Support" direct message me. This has been reported to Etsy.

Link in message will take you to what looks like a legit page with one of your shop listings and shop name - there is also a form on the left for verifying your shop with a credit card. When entered, they will ask for you to confirm you own the card by entering the current available balance. Followed by a pop up asking for you to enter a one-time-authorisation code to complete a payment.

From what I was able to see, they run the payments through Stripe (also reported in detail to their security team). Any cards they can't run quick enough, all details are sent to a Telegram account (also reported) for use later.

Not posting any links for safety, but always be cautious, the site was very convincing and menu buttons had redirects back to the correct Etsy site.

Etsy Community Manager, happy if you need to edit this or want me to change anything let me know

Happy Selling!

Re: Credit Card Scam for Account Verification

Etsy is already aware of the problem since it's been going around since at least June 2022, with a few different versions of the scam.  There have been many OPs about it and Etsy has put out warnings, but unfortunately, some sellers still fall for it.

Real messages from etsy will be in the "from etsy" section of your inbox. Be sure to visit the forums frequently so you are aware of the scams, as well as etsy's miniscule efforts to contain them.
