How did your macrame journey start?

Hello fellow macrame lovers!

My name is Arlene, I started the wonderful art of macrame about 4 years ago now. My partner showed me the basic spiral and flat knots, and how to net around the stone. Everyday I am still learning new things, its totally amazing!!

How about you? When did your journey start?

Much love,
Arlene xXx

Re: How did your macrame journey start?

I started beading when I needed money- and beading is cheap to start out- but then I started doing macrame working for a friend who became my mentor and branched out on my own.

I've been doing macrame now for over 20 years!

Re: How did your macrame journey start?

I was introduced to making macrame in the late sixties by Ginger, owner of the Bead Basket, a small bead store in Waikiki. I was mesmerized by the variety of beautiful beads but completely daunted as to how to choose or use them.

While I was looking at the beads Ginger was taking careful note of the style of my clothes, my complexion, my hair, and the shape of my face. When I asked for help, she tactfully learned the level of my experience (none), helped me choose a focal bead, accents, findings, tools, and an easy and flattering design. Then she showed me how easy it was to make. Soon I was working part time at Ginger's shop and making macrame to sell there on consignment.

Seeing hundreds of customers try on the jewelry was my practical education in design. The experience taught me what was most flattering on different people...and what was in sync with their sense of style. It was such fun to watch them choose.

I was hooked. Within a year I was making jewelry for a living, and I always remembered what Ginger taught me: Make really beautiful things, but design them to be even more beautiful when worn.

Re: How did your macrame journey start?

I've been beading for close to 20 years now, mostly bead-weaving. About 10 years ago, my then-sister-in-law was having difficulty reading the diagrams for some macrame knots. I'm pretty good at reading stuff like that and she does better seeing someone do it, so I learned the knots and then taught them to her. Something...happened. Tying those knots did something to me, and I LOVED it right off the bat. I brushed it away, though, because I didn't see how it could blend with the weaving itty-bitty beads that I liked so much and all that. And I didn't want to take away from what sister-in-law was trying to do with her hemp and 60s-looking beads; we sold off the same tables at a lot of shows.

Then someone gave me some string. It was a really pretty color, but it was .8mm. It's too big to sew with, and too small for any of the crocheting projects I used to do. So...drum roll....I started putting seed beads on it and tying it in knots. Then I felt silk, and again fell in love. The rest, I suppose, is history :P

Re: How did your macrame journey start?

I found macrame during a dark time in my life. I lost my job & I was in an unhealthy relationship. Macrame projects kept my mind off the negative things going on in my life & focus on knots! lol To think how far I've come along in macrame & life is so blissfully happy. I think you can see that in my work; happiness.
So blessed to be part of the macrame community.

Re: How did your macrame journey start?

Hi, everyone! Started recently, about a year ago. Learned a bit of macrame and coil wrapping in college (I'm a fashion design and textile design student) and couldn't stop. I feel that it helps me relax and it certainly keeps my mind off everyday stuff as peaceknot said ^ ! What I know now is pretty basic but would love to learn new techniques and knots! I would also love your feedback :)
