Are my prices too high, too low or just right?

Re: Are my prices too high, too low or just right?

I have been told that my prices are too low.  I thought I was pricing listings at reasonable amounts.  Prices that I would be willing to pay.  Do you think a lower price makes you think a listing is cheap or cheaply made?

Re: Are my prices too high, too low or just right?

sadly I think that's exactly what happens. I know that I make so many crafts that I can look and see when something was simply glued together and some jump rings were applied hastily vs. wire wrapped details that took time, or fabric glued elements on an amigurumi vs. actually sewn on elements. Not all of our customers can tell, so when they see a bunch of a thing clustered at $30 and then one at $45 and another one at $20 I think they presume that the $20 has something wrong with it, the $45 is someone who thinks too highly of themselves and go looking in the $30 range, even if the only person charging properly for time, supplies and work is the one out there at the top. I was told I'm not charging enough or taking good enough pictures. LMAO I think people buy what they see and Etsy has an algorithm for that.

Etsy buyers will pay if they love the item but you do have to be competitive. Check and see what competitors charge and charge accordingly. Don’t sell yourself short. Etsy is a lot of work and time so you need to be paid fairly.

Thank you, SparklingVinyl, I am certain that some prices are too low for the time involved.  I just did not think buyers would want to pay for the time involved.  However, I did not try the increased price first.

It’s hard to answer your question without knowing the cost of your materials and the time it takes you to create each item.  The fabric items seem reasonably priced but I think the crocheted items could be priced higher.  I am very new to Etsy so my experience in this market is limit.  But I did have a brick a mortar store for years and I also crochet.  The rugs are unique...so I think you could raise the prices on those and maybe some of the baskets, etc.

I set the price according to the calculation of the cost price + manufacturing time + delivery + profit.

Thank you, Janice,

Welcome to Etsy.  Your shop looks very nice.  Thank you for your input.  I understand what you meant by not knowing all the logistics.  I was strictly thinking in appearance.  I do create with my heart and as well as I know how.  I am thinking I need to just create and stick with what price pleases me to sell it at.

If you are like me, you spend a bit more time on a project than you can charge for. I love crafting and take extra time to make sure all is perfect. If I charged based on my time, my products would be out of reach. I think your prices are really fair. I love your rugs!!

I so agree, Juanita, I could not charge for my time...because I am not a Speedy Gonzales....more like Slowpoke Rodriguez.

Listings would be expensive.!

Re: Are my prices too high, too low or just right?

There's a crazy balancing act to this one that I've never mastered. What I've heard is that you set and hold the price you need to be paid for your item... and only if it's at least base-line competitive with other people using the same tags. The trouble is that there's always someone "clearing out" and someone else who just makes for fun and doesn't need to be competitive so they just price low to sell.

What I'd recommend is to do what I had to do. Go out and actually search your labels and tags, see what's coming up. Take the time to really look at their products, descriptions and details as well as their prices. Pick a couple of favorites that are on the high and low ends and write those down. Also look at the OTHER tags and labels they're using, particularly if they're a lot higher or lower priced than yours. Then go out again and search just for the product you're offering. Look at those products, descriptions and details as well as their prices. Pick a couple of favorites that are on the high and low ends and write those down. And again, also look at the other tags and labels they're using for the same reasons. I use all of this to sort of form an image in my mind of who I'm really competing with, what our compared value is and I go into the high end on that. And change a lot of my tags and labels based on who I would rather be competing with than not.

Because I make little amigurumi and handmade items I find a lot of the time that I'm only using a couple of the most regularly used tags, a few of mine are almost too unique and that when I get into the "mainstream" my prices are also more reasonable. A lot of people make little stuffed animals, and often you can see where your quality meets or doesn't meet the competition. Be honest and price fairly for your work.

I hope this even helped a little. Like I said, I've been told my stuff doesn't sell because I'm in the "lower quality" price range and photo quality and actually selling higher quality and that creates a disconnect and keeps me from selling. LMAO I paid for that bit of wisdom. Without also paying for professional photos, sadly that's all it was... just a bit of wisdom.

Re: Are my prices too high, too low or just right?

Hello Ruth,

Thank you for your time and expertise.  I have been selling for a few years now.  This has been my slowest year in sales.

When making rugs I needed to sell slowly because I could only make them so fast.  However, when I ventured into a variety everything seemed to slow down and almost stop.

Wish I could go back to making rugs.  I was learning how to perfect them.  Tired hands took me to various other crafts...which I thoroughly enjoy...they just does not sell as well...or at all.

I think your pricing is good.  Sometimes it doesn't hurt to raise prices and then soon after just run a sale.

You have good sales figures, so why are you worried?

Re: Are my prices too high, too low or just right?

Hello Leslie, I have hardly had any sales this year.  I am just piling up my creations.

Not worried...just find it a bit boring to have no activity.
