The Charm of Linocuts

The more I create art in linocuts the more I am intrigued by its ability to transform my expression into a more simplified essential design than I might have had in mind.
Although I have worked in all materials as a sculptor and a painter and a graphic artist there is something about the almost childish quality of things I do in this medium.
Whatever complex image may have been impelling me to create... in the linocut process it is necessarily drained of all superfluity (like panning for gold I guess).

Add to that my sculptors love of carving and working in 3 dimensions along with my long time appreciation of early woodcuts and letterpress...the result is truly satisfying!

I've always thought it was calming how the 3 D aspect meshes with the 2D illustration and prints. I love how you used limited but important color in your lino prints.

When I explain how a linocut is made to someone, they usually stare at me and shake their heads - it's a masochistic form of art making. But I love it all - the preplanning, the drawing, the cutting, the printing, the cutting, the printing...the cutting, the printing... :)

Re: The Charm of Linocuts

Like turpentine, I have always loved the smell of linseed oil which of course is used to make linoleum. A real oil painting and a linocut (the block) have that in common.

I agree with the masochistic side of the trade, it is there and we do enjoy it! ) As my shops hosts different art objects, here are the two linocuts currently on sale:

Re: The Charm of Linocuts

I'm back. Sort of. Something about the dark days of November that get me off the bike and back into the studio. Think I will get my little Kelsey press into action and try some printing. Have some ideas I picked up on my bike rides that might make good lines.
