Staining Linoleum

I'm looking for a way to stain linoleum/rubber before I transfer an image onto it. That way it's easier to see what I've already carved. Of course, It would have to be subtle enough to see the graphite on it once I transfer the image.

Any ideas? I'm considering using a standard Ranger archival ink pad to cover the uncut block in ink and then blotting it off with paper. I have accidentally stained many a rubber block this way, so I figure it's worth a shot--but black seems too dark, so if you have a color suggestion that would help me out too. The rubber I use is very pink.

Re: Staining Linoleum

I always hold the lino against the light and look sideways at it to get a good idea of the end result. Harder sections I colour black with a marker
