Reduction Prints

I'm new to the linocut team and relatively new to linocut printing. Yet I find myself a professional printmaker after almost 40 years of being a painter (oils). Nobody's more suprised about this than me.

After about six months of experimenting with linocuts in 2007, I was introduced to the concept of reduction printing. For me, the big light bulb went on above my head and it has stayed on ever since.

Reduction printing is my passion and my prints average seven or eight colors, going up to fourteen. I often use more than one block and use opaque, transluscent and transparent colors - whatever is needed.

I'm crazy about it!

Re: Reduction Prints

BTW... I purchased Coco Berkman's "Large Mouse in a Fashionable Coat" linocut before I ever sold my first print on Etsy.

Re: Reduction Prints

Hi William, your linocuts are stunning! I particularly love this one ~

I'm relatively new to linocuts and printmaking too, after many years painting watercolours mainly. At the moment I'm trying multiple block linocuts, after using reduction on a number of prints I should I should have a go at the alternative. My Russell-Cotes print is my most ambitious multi-block print so far - https://www.etsy.com/listing/115637317/east-cliff-hall-signed-original-linocut
But I also recently printed a series of cats using reduction - https://www.etsy.com/listing/117449403/charlies-new-friends-signed-original

I love Coco Berkman's work too, good choice! :-)

Re: Reduction Prints

hello
I am also crazy about this technique, I am now experiencing. As soon as I finished my work I post here. For now you can see the stages of processing in my facebook page:

Re: Reduction Prints

hi...I just want to share my love to this technique too, i really adore it, the fact that you "destroy" the plate while you create a print amaze me....

Re: Reduction Prints

I also like reduction lino printing, but I do find it time consuming, and this year I must concentrate on my first love, watercolour, because that brings the most sales. But hopefully I will find time to make one or two more prints this year!

Re: Reduction Prints

I'm very pleased that so many of you have commented on the process of reduction printing with linoleum. It fascinates me and I find it quite challenging. I often tell people that there are multiple reverse-logic considerations in making an image. And that it can take a great deal of planning to pull off a print well. I'm happy to say that I have gotten past the planning necessity and I'm able to pretty much go along according to what I think will work in the print.

Re: Reduction Prints

Hi William! What's funny to me is that before I saw this post, yesterday I happened to see one of your linocuts in the New Items pop-up & clicked on it. I was trying to figure out how you had done it (How many blocks, reduction, in what order...) and thought, "I wish he had more info on his process!" Ha! And here it is!

The amazing print I am speaking about:

I am also enthralled by the reduction method, which to me is so much easier & cleaner than having so many multiple plates. It's funny that anyone who sees me work day to day (mostly family), hates it when I tell them it's a reduction! They complain about the destruction of the block because they almost always love the carving as much as the print and hate to see it 'carved away'! An example of one of mine:
