Line drawing on linoleum printing through ink... Help!

I am working on a hand-pulled reduction print. I transferred my drawing onto battleship Lino using white carbon paper, and it worked great. I traced over the carbon lines with permanent marker so they would not wash away when I cleaned the plate after inking, however, after inking my first, lightest color, the black line drawing showed up on my print.

Any tips on other ways to make a permanent line drawing on the plate?

Thank you!

Re: Line drawing on linoleum printing through ink... Help!

Hi Josh, I don't draw on my lines with pen, I draw on it with pencil once its transferred which some people say isn't ideal since it's too light, I don't think so but I suppose it's a personal preference. If heard people using gouache (which washes off with water) to lighten the surface and then draw over it to make the lines darker. Anyway, I then spray it with some hairspray to seal it so that it doesn't rub off. As far as I'm aware, this doesn't leave lines on the print. You could also try spraying the pen with hairspray but I don't know how well that will work. I think you'll just have to try it out!

Hope this help, do tell me how you get on.

Permanent marker does tend to show in the initial prints when not cleaned or roughened enough. It does help to clean with thinner or oils before printing or sanding down the linoleum for a bit, till the lines show on the plate and not on the print.
Sometimes printing it on the press with a little bit more pressure can also do the trick.
Good luck.
