Interrupting the alphabet to relay a bird family drama!
I saw a fledgling mockingbird perched upon the bush right in front of my window. It was peeping and fluffing its feathers. In a minute, it hopped onto the ground and over to the next bush, where both parents were waiting (so maybe that next bush is where the nest is?). The fledgling joined the adults on a twig, and both adults opened their mouths at it (not quite sure what that protocol is).
Then one adult flew (with a flash of white) to a nearby fence and piped encouraging sounds. The fledgling ruffled its feathers, and the parent that was still with it opened its mouth toward the little one. It proceeded to burrow further into the bush, and the remaining adult flew over to the fence, as the first adult flew from the fence to the roofline (as far as I could see). Then the fledgling popped down onto the ground and flexed its wings a few times, and one of the adults swooped down over it.
I had been standing and holding onto the curtain (not the best support), and at that point, my balance got a little off (should’ve had my walker with me), so I inadvertently swung the curtain. When I looked again, they were all out of sight.
But I’ll be paying as much attention to the bushes as I can, and maybe that little one will make it on its own. I love seeing things like this!
Yellow-headed blackbird
Wow, Jane, that's cool. One time I just happened to be standing looking out the spare bedroom window when a small hawk flew into the tree right outside that window. I froze so I could watch it and not scare it away. Very interesting bird - about the size of a kestral, but very different.
