Hey All,
Just joined the Team. I think this is a great idea. I'm pretty new to Etsy, so I thought I'd say "hi" to like-mined individuals on here.
My name is Karl Biewald. I work out of a design/fabrication cooperative in Brooklyn. I run the shop with Jonathan and Amelia who run the ExoVault iphone case business. You should check them out for a minimalist high-end iPhone case.
I started the Brickhaus line a couple years ago with Klaus Rosburg from Sonic Design here in Williamsburg. I was new to machining, so I thought I'd try to CNC something simplistic. We both thought a simple tape dispenser would be cool. So, the entire Brickhaus set is actually based around the siz of a typical 3M majic tape roll. We just massaged the proportions of the tape dispenser around the roll until it looked right and made sense for stock material sizes.
I showed a buddy of mine the dispenser who worked in the Cooper Hewitt Design Musuem and he loved it, but recommended that I create a set of different items. So, I came up with the Pen & Pencil holder, Letter Opener, Business Card Holder and Storage Bin all based on the same size and shape. I spent my free time over the past year developing all the other items.
So, now I have the CNC paths all programmed and stock waiting on my shelf. When I have some free time, I machine five of one type for a bit of a buffer in case an order comes in. I also package these individually by wrapping them in a mechanical CAD drawing of the part.
So, just a little about my stuff and how it came about. Thanks for any comments!
Good Luck,
--> Karl
